Cold Weather Icing Question

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

You could get a remote car starter, which would allow you to warm it up and defrost the windows before getting in.

Joe, I've noticed that too. What I do is simply remove as much as I can with my ice scraper without getting too close to the seal. When I open the door, if it does go down, I've found that if you give it a gentle push it does and then goes back up fine. I don't get this too offen as I park in the garage at night and its seldom below freezing there. It only happens if we get ice rain while I'm at work where I have to park outside.

Urf, what a mess. And that stuff is not good for automotive rubber and vinyl.

If there's a plug nearby, maybe an electric hair dryer just to break the icy seal? Has anyone ever seen a battery powered hair dryer?

I'll think on it for a bit. Good luck.

I have a Compustar alarm and remote-start my car prior to opening the doors. It is designed for manual transmissions and will not start if there is a possibility of it being in gear. I use it more for the extreme heat since I live in New Mexico versus the cold. I recommend it to everyone.

I simple solution might be to get one of those covers that only covers the top of the car down just pass the windows. You might even experiment with a soft sheet to see if it will help your problem before investing in one. Good Luck.

Opening the door while the window is stuck all the way up will not be a problem, but closing it is where you may do damage.

If it's frozen, just gently pull the door open, get in and roll the window down(may require a bit of a nudge), before closing the door.

I don't know if this has a chance of working, but it's simple and not costly. Take a narrow strip of Saran Wrap and stick it to the bottom of the glass, overlap it onto the seal. Then (hopefully) just peel off in the morning.

If it's a thick sheet of ice you'll still have to nudge it a bit with a scraper, but it will be far easier. I also thought of reinforced cellophane tape, but I wouldn't put that on the seal, just the glass.

OR, these could be really really schtoopid ideas. YMMV

Thanks for thinking PD. I may give that a try. I am not crazy about the window-drop design feature for a number of reasons, and this is one of them.
