A&Q about 350Z
Q:
Hey everyone, I'm a new guy in this forum, although I had my Z for more than a year now (04 enthusiast). I've been thinking of changing the factory air box with a high performance Air intake, however I've heard some people had problems with the Mas air sensor with such modifications. Any of you guys have the same problem? If not what brand do you guys recomend? I live in CA, and not all Intake are leagal here.
Thank you in advance.

Ive had the JWT popcharger for about 10-15k miles now and have never had a problem. Honestly with any of the intakes you arent going to get much in the way of performance. I like the way the JWT sounds, not as flashy looking as some of the others, but also not nearly as expensive($109 vs 200+) and give the same as far as performance. Its also much easier to install and maintain.

I agree with drivenZ. If you missed an earlier post, there is a letter to editor in R&T this month about over oiling a K&N filter (JWT would be the same thing) when its time for cleaning and re-oiling. Apparently if you put too much oil on filter it will foul the MAS sensor. I think it was on page 150 of December issue, if you more info.

Thank you Both for the info ( drivenZ and Zooom). I've seen the JWT pop charger at z motorsports, but unsure of the reliability. I guess it's worth taking a second look at it.

Zooom, When the MAS goes bad, does it damages some internal engine components? Or you just have to get a new MAS and the engine will be back to normal? Thanks again for your support.

KYO.....sorry, I don't know for sure ! Maybe someone else will have an answer to this question !

i believe the tech abbreviation is MAF(Mass Air Flow) sensor atleast thats what ive always seen, regardless though if your MAF gets F'ed up it shouldnt cause damage to the engine. Youll just need to get a new unit which i think is around $400. Or I think its possible to clean if it gets messed up so it may not be a total lost cause if that occurs.
It really shouldnt be an issue though if you oil it right, which isnt hard. I just followed the directions on the back of the K&N oil i bought. Just cover it so theres no more gray you dont need to over do it. the JWT guys say you can go like 10-15k miles before re-oiling also. I did mine after 5k or so.

Ok, so just don't over oil and the MAF should be fine. Thank you both.
I'm thinking if ever I get the JWT, I would purchase an extra filter. In that way, after cleaning and oiling the dirty ones, I can keep it for a few months not installing, while using the newer ones as replacement. Then just kind of cycle it sevice life. What do you guys think?

KYOZ33...If you decided to buy the JWT POPCharger...if you look real close at the tubing you'll see arrows...make sure the arrows are exactly even when hooking up. This way you should not have a problem with MAF sensor. The new JWT POPCharger is pre-oiled but it would be a good idea when opening the pkg., rest the filter on newspaper for 1 day or so just to make sure it's not over oiled. Here's a link to very simple & easy cleaning instructions...IMHO you would not need an extra filter but it's OK.
I bought mine from I paid $109.00 shipped...ask for Paul if the price is higher today. lol
My SB ZR still feels like HEAVEN....what a wild ride!

That'll work too sluggoz, but I think 2 filters would definitely increase the margin of safety. But thank you anyways.
