Q:
Due to the fact i couldnt catch up to a maxima the other day on the highway at speeds of 110+ i need sum performance gear.. need to boost acceleration and overall hp..
so its time for my baby's first oil change, and getting mobil 1 synt, K&N oil filter and K&N air filter... now want an intake.. heard good things about stillen, what u guys think?? how about K&N or AEM? any other small stuff that will help me out here?

You say you already got a k&n air filter and now want an intake? That doesn't make sense considering an intake is a better air filter. Also if you are looking for true power gains you won't find it in an intake and exhuast upgrade. At speeds of 110+ 10hp won't make much of a difference in catching somone if they are already ahead of you. Read up on the 350z and mods and you'll soon see that basic bolt ons for the 350z don't really do much in the hp area becuase Nissan already did a very good job at extracting hp from this motor. At this point if you want power you either need to do internal engine work as well as bolt ons or go the easier route and get a forced induction kit. Synthetic oil with a k&n oil filter and intake won't do dick to help you go faster at 100+ mph and even at lower speeds you won't even see a .1 difference at the track.

CantZmee: Totally don't get the notion that "the working parts . . . don't react well" to synthetic oil. If that's the case, then the Nissan folks have come up with an engine that's unique in the automotive world. I won't go into the list of reasons that synthetic motor oils are superior to refined oils. That is established knowledge. Doug may be an excellent "wrench," but on this one, he's swimming against the tide.
Has anyone out there heard otherwise from a credible source?
A:
I must admit, Joe, that my knowledge of the working parts in the glorious VQ is limited, at best.
Doug was not clear on his reasoning behind preaching non-synthetic oil. During a phone conversation this morning he simply told me that his "experience" has shown that crude refined oils in a Z engine have shown better performance. I think I misquoted him sayin that the "working parts do not react well.." bit. I have always been skeptical of mechanics. I have always heard to use syn. oils on higher mileage cars. I can't say that I have researched any documented study or comparison on using one versus the other. Maybe you have. But I would assume that Doug is not going to do anything to my Z that is going to hurt it. I trust him. He seems to have a pretty faithful following around here (Nashville). So I guess my opinion really was formed by someone else. We will have to wait and see what time tells me as far as my decision.
I am sure that you can come up with a hundred reasons why snythetic is better. I was just relaying what i heard from my mechanic.
Either way, the bottom line is, I don't think you are doing any damage using synthetic oil, but for me and my Z, it's going to be regular. I can't back that up with facts, just Doug's advice. maybe when I get some more time I can research it further.
