A&Q about 350Z
Q:
2003 350Z
i have a small leak in tire. i took it to a tire repair shop, so they could patch it and they wanted $30 for repair. they said it was that expensive because they had to deal with the psi sensor on rim/tire. any truth to this?
thanks

Probably not. Sound like Greed to me

Where i work we also have to deal with them..and actually I think we might get more labor time for taking the sensors out to repair the tire...

Where is the leak? I got a nail in the tread of my tire last year and it was $20 to patch. The TPS shouldn't affect cost. I have taken my tires off while working on my car and didn't have any problems with the sensor when I put the tires back on.
A:
2nd that...TPS shouldn't affect the cost to repair. It isn't in the tire...its in the valve stem.

I've fixed a flat on a 350Z tire with the tire pressure sensor on it, no different than any other flat tire I have ever fixed.

You are going to complain about a $30 tire repair on a $250-350 tire?
A:
ok here goes
i'm the guy that owns the goodyear tire shop.
yeah, we charge extra for tps equipped tire/wheels.
why......
in order to do tire repairs, we need to remove the sensor first. if we don't remove the sensor, there's a strong chance it could be damaged during the tire dismounting.
if the tire shop damaged your sensor they'd be on the hook to replace it for you.
so we charge extra money for several reasons......
it requires more time to do the repair.
it requires special tire machinery to remove the tire(an old fashioned tire machine just won't cut it).
also, if no one has told u.....dismount those factory bridgestone re040's is a total b_tch.
i hate dealing with those factory tires because they are really difficult to deal with!!!!!!
the sidewalls on the factory bridgestone tires is like steel and they are really hard to dismount for any reason(flat tire or tire replacement....)
A:
$30 is not very expensive...I can't believe you are complaining about that. Wow...just pay it and get back to driving. :)
Edit:
oh but to answer you question, there's no need to remove the TPS to do a simple plug type flat repair, unless they're patching it, then yes they'd need to dismount the tire and patch it from the inside, which I still don't see a need to remove the TPS, but that's still cheap for $30!

30 bucks might not sound much until you compare it to the 12 i've paid before. so 30 bucks is more than double.

dude
maybe u should be driving a kia instead of a Z.
then u could afford to pay $30 for a flat repair.
A:
maybe i should, but a tire is a tire and a hole is a hole.

ok
for all YOU GOMER PYLE'S out there that want to plug a tire from the outside of the tire.....it's a really bad idea. it will void the warranty on any tire.
tire plugs that are installed from the outside are for idiots at gas stations that don't have the proper tire equipment for repairing and dismounting tire from ANY kind of wheel.
not one major (or minor) tire manufacturer recommend plugging a tire from the outside.
if u want to have a blowout at 80, 90 or 100 mph because an external tire plug worked itself loose, GO FOR IT!
me, i'd rather have a tire repaired by a professional than some hack at a gas station or some rookie with a do-it-yourself kit he bought at kragen or autozone!

Back off dude.
Some service providers, including Nissan would plug a flat tire from the
outside.

While I agree with jdgdyr about Nissan not knowing anything about tires .. I disagree on the service price that some tireshops offer. Patching a tire costs me $16 and to me it seems that usually the price varies on the value of the car being driven.
