A:

Yikes is right. Where did you pick up the new stats? Is the new '06 sales brochure posting the new weights? Before you know it, the car will be back up to the weight of a Z32.

i hope those arent the real numbers...if so, Nissan is retarded. How the heck are you going to add weight to a car that everyone says would be a lot better if it were a bit lighter.

Those numbers appear to be straight off Nissan's web site. Looks real to me. Fuel economy for M/T models has also decreased slightly. It's now listed as 19/25.

A:

wow, that is severely dissapointing. I cant believe they would do that.

Those weights are the same as the Z32. With less hp and no turbo Nissan is definetly going in the wrong direction. I really hope they stop the 350z and do something new for 07.

me too i love the 350 but in order to really be competive they need to go in another direction.more weight less gas mileage come on!

It's only 150lbs. I know it's heavier, but it's not that much heavier. Don't get me wrong, I don't like that it is, but it wouldn't change my mind if it's what I wanted...

150 lbs is a lot of weight, from what i know the weight comes from federaly mandated safty bars in the doors and also stronger bumpers. Does any know the safty rattings for the 05z and the 06z?

1990 RS Camao (Ya i know im getting a Z but i still love my Camaro!)
2002 Z28 LS1 T56 yes its fast no you cant drive it!

A:

03 had a 5-star rating! So, why change that safety set-up? Mandated then probably.

A:

If that's so, how come the new 2006 Porsche Cayman will come in tipping the scales at barely over 3,000 lb.s, while this already pregnant guppy gained another 150 lbs. As the old saying goes, "you get what you pay for." Another typical Nissan, Carlos Ghosn "cheap fix."

When you are in a fairly large/heavy coupe with a n/a medium displacement naturally aspirated 6 cylinder engine, 150lbs is significant; not like it was light to begin with.

Yeah, I can feel the difference when a 150-pound person rides along in my Z. I could also tell when I put those 20" rims and big tires on it.

But fortunately, there's a solution: forced induction! Coming to my Z soon...

hmm... if my girlfriend gained 150lbs, I'd be gone. But my car, I can deal with it. It's still a respected, fast car.

A:

If I recall, the roadster and coupe are different weights. Might want to check to make sure the above figures are for couple only.

A:

Those were definitely coupe numbers w/manual transmission......the roadster is heavier. Various Models 5SAT have different weights too!

My SB ZR still feels like HEAVEN....what a wild ride!

A:

It is all about perception. Many articles say the Z is heavy. Yet a 03 Track is only about 100 lbs heavier than the "Lightweight" 06 Z06.

A:

yes, but the 06 Z06 has 200+ more horsepower then the Z. Place that V8 setup in the Z and see how much it gains.

A:

You'll have to get used to be disappoint when you choose to go the 350Z route.
But what the heck do I know?

========================

Power with intelligence.
Speed with sensitivity.
It's the Z.

A:

be serious though the Z could never be the elise...if it was i surely wouldnt have bought it. You need to have some sort of practicality. And to the guy who said to get used to dissapointment when you buy a 350Z...My 350 is now 3 years old, vin#189, and i have yet to be dissapointed.

You are dead right, drivenZ

I am not comparing the two.

I bought the Z because it is an AMAZING car and it is very unique. It could never be the Elise. I wouldn't want it to.

I would want an Elise though. I do, and have, and will, and hopefully one day I can have what I want!

But I agree with you. If the Z was anything else, I wouldn't want it. The Z is what it is, and that's why I love it.

A:

I mentioned the Elise as an example. That's not to say that I wouldn't have some reservations. For one thing, many have questioned the durability of the Toyota engine used in the Elise. For another, the weight is kept down through use of aluminum extrusions and panels throughout. This is wonderful tech, but who's going to fix it if you get into a fender bender? Finally, the cockpit dimensions impose some significant height and weight restrictions--mainly height--on potential drivers.

They don't come any edgier than the Lotus, and I'm not suggesting that Nissan should have gone that route. On the other hand, my impression is that the Z is just packed full of stuff that adds unnecessary pounds. For example, the "Track" model outweighs all of the coupes except the "Touring" version. Track? I would have expected that model to be the lightest, leanest one in the mix--a real, no-frills stripper with the intake, exhaust, braking, and suspension to go with it.

A:

Very good point Joe_C

And regarding the Lotus, much more astutely put than I, but the same idea.

A:

With the extra 100-150lbs, plus the extra 13 HP, would you notice a big difference in handling? Too soon for some 0-60 times in the heavier 06 verses the lighter 03's? I am currious ....and what about the weight numbers for 04's and 05's ? When did the "weight gain's" take place ?

zooom: The more weight you have to get around a turn, the higher the cornering forces that need to be generated. You can compensate some with suspension and tires, but a lighter car with the same setup is going to "handle" better every time. Again, the Elise has far less hp than the Z, yet it will outperform cars costing twice as much and by a good margin.

I have to confess that when I crawl under my Z, I don't see a lot of big steel sections, and I don't find any obvious too-heavy stuff in other parts of the car. I think that's why peeling off some serious pounds is not easy for this car. But, for goodness' sake, the Vette is at least 100 lbs lighter, and it's got a gazonga V-8 up front. So, the chubby little Z can only be lightened by taking off lots of little things or by doing things to the car that would really render it a "stripper."
