A&Q about 350Z
Q:
What gear is everyone in while flying around the roads. I would like to know for both AT/MT. What speeds are acceptable given normal conditions at certain gears. AND how bad is it to touch the Red Line once in a blue moon?
A:
With gas prices as high as they are, I generally try to stay in as high a gear as possible, downshifting when I want to accelerate. This being said, I'll try to keep the RPM's right around 2000 when I'm just flowing with traffic.
Your car has a rev limiter, so you cannot hurt your car by redlining it. If you rev it up too high, it will cut the gas to the engine and you'll know it immediately.

Because of high gas prices, I like to accellerate slowly and shift early. That being said, I generally cruise in the minimum reccommended speeds given in the owner's manual:
2nd @ 7
3rd @ 14
4th @ 24
5th @27
6th @ 33 [altough I usually wait until at least 40 to get into 6th]
Of course, it all depends on how fast I'm accellerating.

Well, I don't think you know either

It causes bad gas mileage and it's bad for your engine to be 'lugging' your motor all the time. You still want to keep your engine within power producing sections of your RPM band. WOT in 6th at 33mph is too low IMO, even with the shorter than normal gears of the transmission. If you do cruise at very low rpms, shift higher into the RPM band before attempting to accelerate considerably. In most cars, 2k to 3k seems to be a good accelerating portion of the RPM band, where gas efficiency is high but stress on the engine is still moderate to low. Most engines are healthier at WOT near redline than idle, contrary to popular belief.
