A&Q about 350Z
Q:
I have a question...
I have read about a "rattling" problem with the axle/drivetrain. I want to know if my car qualifies for this problem. I just got my car three weeks ago (has 600 miles on it), and sometimes (more often than not) when I shift from 1st to 2nd, there is sort of a clicking noise coming from what sounds like underneath the car. It happens as I push the clutch to the floor. It is generally just one click or a short series of two or three. It isn't loud, but enough to notice. It only happens between first and second. I shift very carefully and never rev over 3000 because the car is new. I don't hit the gas until the clutch is all the way "home" (let out), and even then I very lightly press the gas; a very linear sort of pressure. I apologize to all those who drive behind me and have to go at a "cruise" pace because I am breaking my car in properly, but honestly I couldn't really give a hoot.
Does anyone know of this problem, or has anyone experienced anything like it? It has pretty much made the clicking noise from day one, therefore I am wondering if it is just a new clutch/sports car clutch, and nothing to be worried about. Again, I am not concerned as much as just intrigued. The car shifts fine, and the gears catch perfectly...almost too much so. This is my first manual driver so I am still new to the whole thing.
Any advice would be appreciated.

I notice that as well, but mine happened only at first time after I have parked the car for longer periods. Usually happened when I go to work in the morning. The passenger could notice that as well. He told me his 2001?? M3 does the same thing, and that's normal.

Couple of things here. First is the dual mass flywheel that gives you that funny noise and feeling when you shift. The second is the lack of a grounding kit from the factory. Yes, there are those in the group that think the grounding kit is a waste of time. But, it is installed factory in Japan on their cars. This allows a smoother response from the throttle. Your car will still have a little noise from the dual mass flywheel but that will never go away unless you change to a conventional type. That would void the warranty so it is here until that runs out. The Corvette has the same dual mass flywheel design so it is worth living with as it keeps the horsepower from blowing the rear end out of the car along with the composite driveshaft.

changing flywheels would not void your warranty. have it installed by nissan. if they can prove that the aftermarket component failed and caused other damage then thats when warranty issues would arise.

Thanks for the response. Like you said Obsidian, I only notice it after I have been parked for a while. It usually goes away after I have driven the car for a few blocks.
