A&Q about 350Z
Q:
First, I wish to thank everyone who took the time and energies to share their knowledge, expertise, and experiences regarding the modifications I was planning to install.
Well, I went ahead with installing the NISMO mods (CAI, headers and catback exhaust). I live on one of the islands here in Hawai'i, and there are only two (2) Nissan dealers, both owned by the same family.
Due to the limited amount of resources here, I had to make the appointment to install the mods over two (2) months ago. The Friday, before my appointment, I received a call from the dealership to confirm that I was bringing the car in on Tuesday, and to inform me that they would not accept the parts any earlier than Monday afternoon. In addition, I was informed that the work to install will now take two (2) days instead of the one day they had originally quoted me. I accepted the changes and confirmed I would be there.
Well, Tuesday, August 23rd I dropped off the car at the 7:15 a.m. time I was instructed to.
Today is Friday, August 26th, and the car is still in the shop. I called the dealer Wednesday morning....car not ready, told to call back in the afternoon. I called at 2 p.m., car not completed, they will need the car for another day.
Called yesterday morning. Service writer compliments me on the parts being installed, car on the ground and should be ready before their 5 p.m. closing time.
Arrived at the dealer at 3 p.m., after returning rental car and was told that the car is still not done, that they need it for another day. Service writer guarantees car to be done by end of workday today. I am calling them after lunch to check on progress.
A few questions:
1. Should it take that long?
2. Is the installation that difficult?
3. Their labor rate is $85 per hour. Are they trying to extend the time to "jack" the charges up on me. Can they do that?
4. Is there a shop guide for an install like this, showing the acceptable time and charges for such, like they do for other service jobs.
5. If the charge is higher than the $850 quoted me, do I have recourse?
I apologize for burdening this site with this situation. But following this website for over a year, I am impressed with the wealth of knowledge and expertise that is here, plus how unsefishly it is shared.
Thank you,
T

Sounds to me like you are going to get a big install bill or they are way under staffed. Probably had a unexperenced monkey that may have botched something... There is a job hour chart on most items. If they quoted you $850.00 hold them to it. Tell them that they did not hold up their end of the contract. Car not delevered in time. You were inconvinenced and were without transportation. etc:

My SB ZR still feels like HEAVEN....what a wild ride!

For a dealership: CAI - 20 minute install. CatBack exhaust - 30 minute install. Headers - no idea, and probably the source of your extended wait. Hold them to their original quote!

i hear headers are a bitch to install, the other stuff is cake. I would still certainly hold them to the original quote.

We have a saying in the medical field: "Respondant Superior"
this is latin meaning, "let the master answer"
as a medical assistant, we say nothing that we know has a chance of being incorrect, we let the doctor always do the talking about the patients condition.
i'm telling you this because, really this is how most places should be, if a person representing ANY place tells you a definate answer ANY reasonable person will take that word as if the owner of the company gauranteed them the same... am i right?
my shop that installed my subs had quoted me "no more than $750" when it was all said and done, i paid 650 for installation, not too bad i thought...
so hold them to their word, whether they said that to you or you have it in writing, its a contract and they must adhere to it...
