Gas Tank Capacity

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

Inside my manual and on the web resources, It clearly states that 350z has a 20 gallon tank, but the must i filled in my Z was 17 gallon when i drove almost 10 mile passed the 0 DTE( distance to empty)

Best way to find out is the old fashion way. Take a gallon of gas with you and drive until you run out of fuel. Then fill it up and see how many gallons it takes. Now doing that today is not to good of an idea since it will shorten the life of your fuel pump. In fact you should never allow your fuel level to get much below 1/8 of a tank. Reason: that too will shorten the life of your fuel pump. Best thing for you to do is return to your dealer with your complaint about the gage not being correct and see if he can correct it.

Read the manual. Do not run the car out of gas or the system will freak out and set a MIL code. There is a TSB for the gas tank not filling properly. If you fill yours all the way up and it is showing full then I would be looking at a sending unit.

How many of you have put more than 17 gallons into your Z at a time? I have been very close to empty and have never gotten anywhere near 20 gallons. I thought that the reason for this was because of safety- they want you to think that there's less in your tank than you actually have.

interesting observation there stank!i can see them doing that but in hines site.i honestly think the dealer is just waiting for us to bring our cars in.that way they can look for things wrong.it wouldn't be the first time the dealership tried to tell someone that the owner was at fault.yeah i'm definitely with the other guys don't run it out of gas.it could really foul things up.z ya

Hey zlion,

How has your signature changed? It looks the same to me.

Have you ever put over 18 gallons in?

Most cars now set the empty with a couple gallons left to try to prevent people from running out of gas. 3 gallons left is right where mine reads 0 left. I tested that out the pretty soon after I got mine so I would know for future reference.

Dude, haven't you seen Back to the Future? At the end, Doc had modified the deloean to be powered by a small, fusion-based nuclear power system! He just put bananna peels and other garbage into it and it turned the matter into energy.

I don't think that the world has just yet invented a fusion-based nuclear power system, but I think that they are working on developing one in France. It works kind of like the one from the Spider Man 2 movie, whereby a hydrogen fusion reaction is suspended in a magnetic field. If the government would let us be the pioneers of this type of power in the U.S., we could have a practically unlimited power supply with almost no atomic waste, thus quenching our thirst for foreign oil and providing us with a clean, cheap, safe, and efficient power source for generations to come. Cars could be fuled by hydrogen and have no emmissions!

Sorry about the rant, but I get excited when I think of nuclear power. Back to 350z talk.

2003-2005 NISSAN 350Z; FUEL TANK DIFFICULT TO FILL AT TIMES

http://www.nissanhelp.com and you can print the service bulletin on the gas tank.

I'm guessing that one of two things is true: (1) The real tank capacity is around 17 gallons--they meant it to be 20, but, hey, it's just engineering, or (2) it really is 20 gallons, and they've got the instrumentation set up to give you a 3-gallon margin--which would be so Japanese, always anticipating operation by fools.

A:

i get you stank that was funny but hey it would be awesoe to be able to run garbage in your car.no more land fills just toss in some garbage and your on your way.that was a good movie by the way pretty creative.sometimesyou have to spell it out for me.:)

I have had my car down to a gallon. I drove way past "O DTE" to see. Like 60miles. I filled up 18.5 gallons but didn't run out.

I believe mine to opperate as hunter164's does. It allows you a about three gallons to find a gas station. Nissan doesn't want you to run out so I think they are on the safe side. I went throught the above exercise to see if it seemed like it really was a usable 20 gal tank. It seems like it is. You just really don't want to go any lower than I did IMHO opinion. Like others say..... it will throw a code..... and purging the fuel system might be a little fun if you run completely out of gas.

I think you just have to bleed the air out of the system using the air bleed in the intake but, I am not sure. I really do not want to have to do that three or four times to make sure all the air is out.

I generally keep three or more gallons in my cars anyways. So, when I get to "0 DTE" I just start looking for gas and know I have about 60-70 miles to go on a freeway before I run out. Of course that means .... maybe only 25-30 miles in town or 15 miles in traffic.

At least that is my take on the whole thing...... Hope this helps some. :)

stank -

Your reference to back to the future is a little inaccurate. If you remember, Mr. Fusion was to replace the plutonium chamber he was using for time travel. However the car still runs on its internal combustion. You learn this in BTTF3.

It is a twenty gallon tank. There are two tanks in one. One is behind the passenger seat, where the fuel pump is and the other one is behind the drivers seat where the fuel sending unit is. The tanks share a common top where the fuel supposedly falls over from a pipe that connects the two. The pipe has a shutter valve on it and sometimes it will not allow fuel to transfer in the refueling process. There is a TSB for this and if you are within the 3 years 36K miles the dealer will correct the problem for free. Sometimes you can get a completely fll tank and sometimes the valve hangs and you only get a partially full tank. You know your gauge goes above the full mark when you get it full and when it does not the needle is on full or about there... Mine is at the dealer right now getting the new valve installed. The TSB covers all 350Zs made from 2003 to 2005...

Good information! I'll have to double check mine next time I fill up.

So far, no problem as far as I can see.
