A&Q about 350Z
Q:
Okay,
the newest on the continuing Z car cover legacy started in earlier thread..
I went to Cosco, bought the Car Cover for $29 labeled "Car Cover" 4 layer.. comes with lock and cable.
I just need protection from dust dirt, wind and rain mostly. (in Sunny CA)
I have to cut a hole in it for the antenna.
My Z came off the production line in late November 05.
Question is this: Is it safe to start using a cover yet on paint that is that fresh? And if so, is this cover something you guys would recc with having to add a hole for the antenna?

A:
The cover shouldn't damage the paint.
And no, you don't need to worry about the hole that you added for the antenna

I should be more clear about the "hole" question..
will the cover be very effective in rain and against dust if theres a hole in it? seems like its defeating the purpose.
im probably overanalyzing this.. but.. hey.. gotta think about things.

I'd Zaino (or wax) the paint first - to allow a seal, in case the cover gets wet, so you do not have moisture transferance due to constant contact.
Additionally, protecting against any moisture gettting in isn't realistic - this cover isn't hermetically sealed. Humidity alone will add considerable moisture under that cover. Use dessicant packs inside the car for long term storage.
Believe only what you think, not what you feel.
A:
Would you recc a higher quality cover for less moisture build?

A:
Hey, DO NOT CUT THE COVER JUST TAKE THE ANTENNA OFF that way the water wont get under and start to ruin your car.

The hole can't be that big. Don't worry about it.

You've made a major mistake: you bought a non-custom fit cover. Small, medium, large is your choice. And it will flop around on a car that is not exactly small, medium, or large.
You've invested over $34,000 in a new car. Why do you think a $29 car cover is a good purchase? Geez, why not put an old bedspread and bricks on it?
Simply amazing.

Dude, its a freakin car cover. As long as it covers the car, who cares what size it is or how expensive it was? That wasn't the question anyway. He clearly asked:
"Question is this: Is it safe to start using a cover yet on paint that is that fresh? And if so, is this cover something you guys would recc with having to add a hole for the antenna?"
The answer: the paint will probably be fine, and as long as it stays on the car the hole for the antenna is probably nothing to worry about.

You get what you pay for. A shower curtain would cover it, too. Why not throw $3.29 at it and be done with it?

You've expressed great love for your new purchase. Give it the gentle care that will preserve its new look. A good car cover if you need one. Good car cleaning products. Soft cotton cloths and towels.
I speak from experience and only want to lend a hand. Good luck to you.
A:
ooh ooh the best car cover ever made=a garage, its that simple
sorry i just had to say it and be a smart azz.
i dont think cutting actually making a very small slit in the cover will harm anything.

You may want to look at higher end car covers. Many of them are soft-badded, and have breatheable fabrics - sort of like Tyvex for cars. The fitted covers are best because they will not flop in the wind, which can create friction damage, especially if dust/sand/debris work their way under - which they can. Snug fit is best. Prepare to spend upwards of $180.00 for a good cover.

shadowgk, wax your car first before using the car cover you got. It'll help protect your paint. And don't worry about that hole you made as long as they're not too big. Bring it on Sunday, let me see.

If I come across as indelicate, I can only state that I respond with passion when passion is needed.
Slapping a dollar store bargain across the paint of a new Z and asking for approval brings out the passion.
Shoot, at least I don't switch to ALL CAPS!!
Crappy car covers produce crappy results. Before that thing rots over time, as you so eloquently espoused, it will bang the snot out of poor shadow's paint.
40 months and my car looks pretty darn good. Experience rules.
A:
Yeah I was in a bad mood yesterday afternoon so I may have been a bit negative as well..

shadowgk - You probably bought the Wolf car cover, right? $30 is a good price. I think I have been paying $34? Anyways, I own five of these cover for various different cars that have to stay out in the rain etc... It is a very good cover with a soft inner shell. No scratches on any of the vehicles that I have used them on. Don't believe haters. ;)
When it is windy just use a soft rope to pull the cover tight in the middle.
I say this not to prevent scratches just to keep the cover - covering the car. The wind will push it off one end or the other if you are not taught in the center. Tie it through the eyelits underneath the car. It works great.
I bought the size recommended for my Z and it fits nicely.
No, it doesn't have mirror pockets. However, that makes it that much easier to put on and take off. I use my car cover every day.... summer and winter.
Saves the interior and keeps the car cool when you get in the car in the summer as well. These covers last about 3-4 years .... same as the more expensive ones. Actually, my more expensive one got brittle after 4 years and the only reason I replace a Wolf was because I ripped it by putting it into the washer ..... Thinking I wanted a quick clean later to read: You are supposed to wash this type of special material on the car and let it air out on the car.
If your paint is less than three months old the paint hasn't outgassed completely and you shouldn't cover it. At least, this is what the body shops are telling me. Maybe that is for repainted car not baked on paint from the factory. I would wait at least 3 months from mfg date as some of the body shops that I respect have said ....some said six months. However, over the years I also have found that three months is plenty. I would seal it at three months with a good sealer and then start covering it 3-4 days later. ;)
If you made you hole by using a soldering gun tip (suggested by wolfe) your hole will be big enough for the antenna and should cause any major water problems.
As stated above, condensation happens so it get moist under the cover. They are designed to air out very well. Dry packs help somewhat but not completely. You'll see minor dust streak after a heavy rain.
You don't need a $200 car cover for protection IMHO. My $500 boat coat still needs a ($30) heavy duty plastic tarp on it with dry-ease in the boat to keep it completely dry. You don't want to leave plastic on the car after a rain it will bubble the paint.
The only thing I do not like to do is roll the covers up wet. However, as soon as I get to a new destination, the cover goes back on and it drys.
It just sucks if you are wearing a suit.
You have to be careful not to drag it across your pants while wet.
Is this helping? ;)
I've had to cover boats, RV's, trailers, cars, motorcycles, and the Wolf covers above works just fine.

it's a conspiracy
i got my shot antenna off ebay for 5 bucks.
A:
same... for about 5-10 i don't remember how much exactly... so i wasn't too terribly pissed i was just glad i still had my stock one... but i miss my stubby...
i was more pissed off that someone touched my car... if only i had a gun...
i'da shot tha foo'...
i'm really considering some way to wire up a 500,000 volt tazer into the body of the car... for an alarm system...
with proximity sensors that will activate and charge the system if someone gets too close... then shocking the hell outta them when they do touch it...
i have a feeling that i would end up finding someone passed out next to my car... i would then be required to write on their foreheads backwards the words...
