An observation on 350Z hp ripoffs.

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

I just finished reading an adv for something called a turbonator. That guaranteed 30+ HP gain. What BS!!! I've been around for a long time and have seen this con in several different forms from the 1950's till now. In todays version its a object that you put in your air intake. In the earlier form it was a plate that you bolted under your carb. that had a small fan in it.
Both things give you the same results...Nothing...What gets me is people actually fall for this old ploy. They claim it works like a super charger or turbo.. If thats the case just place a small funnel in your air intake hose so that the intake of air is more concentrated as it comes out the small end of the funnel and goes into the engine...Same results as the aboved mentioned..Nothing. I just had to rant. :0 Oh! I almost forgot the famous Grounding kit. That idea is in a class by itself...

I agree. I too have been around cars since the mid 1950's and the only car that I can remember ever having a grounding problem was the 1953 Corvette. A lot of GM engineers had egg on their faces over that one<G>.

My best friend inn high school had one of the first five hundred. his grandfather was a Chev. Dealer. They did not have the All fiber glass idea down pat at the time. Forgot about some of the grounding issues on that one.

Actually those grounding kits work. They dont really add power but they do tend to help out with the smoothness of accleration and idle.

That "turbonator" was actually on a space ad on another (I won't say which)
Z forum. Unbelieveable!

OK seeing as it still appears as a banner ad I WILL say which one. My350z.com and the ad is highlighted with "supercharge your 350Z" I even PM'd their admin a few months back to ask WTF is that ad doing on a performance forum and got no response. I assume it is to make people sign up and pay for being a "premier" member in order to not see such trash. Needless to say, I do not post over there, at least not often.

good grounding can be an issue in Z32s. the ground nets can help in those cars. Proably not beneficial with 350Z and newer cars.

DG39 .. thats the world famous As seen on TV! hahaha.

Maybe you could put some of those Brooklands Racing Screens on your Yugo, too.

Kind of along the same lines, don't you think?

A:

What if we got 2 of those tornadoes and put one in each exhaust pipe?

Wouldn't that make the whole car faster?

Just think it would be like jet engines!!

You know I saved a ton of money by buying a pinwheel from the local drugstore and craming in my intake. I got at least 50 ponies just from that!

Want even more power!!

Put Armor All on your leather seats so when you take off you slam into the back of your seat, that's gotta be another 75 ponies.

Ok, I really shouldn't of had all of that caffeine today.

brookland raceing screens and ken purdy are antiques and you are giveing away your age. 99.9 % of these guys have no idea of wherefore you are speaking.

I know! But its fun! Messing with minds is a good thing!
It won't hurt to know how those four weeled contraptions got their start. The rice nation did not invent them. They just improved them.

an MG is a trials or hill climing car. It was designed to pull a 45 degree slant and has a first gear that you dont normally use. Most of the time you use 2 through 4 in normal driving..An MG-TD is a whole different ball game. And actually more fun to drive than a Z.

Brooklands Racing Screens:

A:

Gentlemen, gentlemen.....you must go all the way and actually explain the three terms BROOKLANDS, RACING, and SCREEN. Be patient, a good teacher is always patient. I am also of the Geezer Class, grew up on Healeys, MG-TDs, and TR3s, and spent 30 years with Healeys before I purchased my first Z, my sweet golden 90NA, which I truly consider a descendant of the XK-120, Healey sixes, and the late great Triumph TR 6.

OK, maybe racing is obvious, but no one under the age of 60 knows that BROOKLANDS was the Great Britain equivalent of our Indy. It is just a ruin today. "Screen" is a briefer version of "Windscreen", which is the safety glass everyone looks through when they drive a motorcar. USA=windshield......GB=windscreen.

Brooklands windscreens are simply small glass windshields that are used when the main windscreen is folded for sporting events. Why?.. well just as we do today - to reduce frontal area, thereby reducing drag. Drag, as everyone knows, kills horsepower, reduces speed, and is THE ENEMY.
