A&Q about 350Z
Q:
It is the airbag control module that causes this. It is ususally buried way up under the dash board requiring complete removal, at quite an expense.
I found this out because the same thing happens intermittly on my 1990 mazda miata. I took it to the dealer, and he told me way under the dash, removal of entire dash. 300 to 500 in labor + cost of module. I asked if it would cause un-expected airbag deployment. He answered no it would not, in that when the light was not flashing, the airbag system is working o.k. When the Air Bag light is blinking, the system is disarmed, and nothing will cause the air bag to deploy. i have been driving for four years with this symptom, and no problems. I would remove the damn air bag system, but it is not legal to do so, and nobody will do it.

The airbag controller is under the center console, so it's very easy to get to. When you had your stereo and speakers installed they may have knocked a plug loose to the controller and it just now came out. A few screws to remove the console and it's easy to check.

LISTEN...FOLLOW THESE STEPS. PUT YOUR KEY IN THE IGNITION AND THEN TURN TO THE ON POSITION AND WAIT TILL THE AIRBAG LIGHT STARTS TO FLASH. AS SOON AS U SEE THE LIGHT GO ON TURN THE KEY TO OFF POSTION AND COUNT TO TEN AND TEHN REPEAT THESE STEPS FOUR MORE TIMES ADN YOUR AIRBAG LIGHT SHOULD TURN OFF.

I am down in the Lacey/Tumwater area, so I took it to the dealer in Tumwater.
They checked it out and said the "right side airbag module" is kaput and the part is on backorder. They gave me my car back until the part comes in - supposedly next week.
Somehow they cleared the flashing light that was driving me nuts - don't know if they used any magic incantations or sacrificed any small animals.
My trusty 100K mile extended-warranty is really paying off on this car. It will pay for all but $100 on the module replacement. The dealer is also trying to hit me up for a new clutch throwout bearing. I'll have to think about that one if it means driving a rental car.
Hey, does everyone in Washington drive 58 MPH in the fast lane, and not move over if you want to pass? These folks would have multiple sets of tire tracks over their cars in California :-) In CA, all posted speed limits are merely a suggestion.

It will be close to 70K by the time I get "Emma" home in October. I live in my Z :-)

Hmmm. I wonder if the dealer is pocketing the expensive new airbag module and essentially charging me and the insurance company for plugging the old one back in.

They probably wouldn't have put you on 'backorder' if that were the case.
