A&Q about 350Z
Q:
Ok.. I installed a set of brand new Bridgestone Pole Positon - S03 TIRES ON MY Z on 02/18/05.
Today (06/27/05), I had to emergency replace both of my front tires that were SEVERELY worn out to the point of metal poking out of the tires..it was really bad. I don't think I could have gone 40 miles w/o both my front tires exploding! Glad I caught this in time.
Now here are some quick notes:
1- The car is used for normal day-to-day driving home-office for the most part during this time.
2- My tire sensors never reported under or over inflated tires. I always had them at 35lbs.
3. My back tires are completely fine!!!
What the heck happened...why did my front tires only last for about 5K miles?
Of course I already went thru the dreaded factory check on my suspension when I had the feathering problem back when I only had 8K miles on the Z.
So, was it the S03 tires being pure crap? Or is there another problem lurking around?
Let me know if anyone else had this expereince w/ the Bridgestone Pole Position S-03 TIRES.
Thx...

if you are only driving between work and home why are you putting on the pol positions? what's the tread wear rating?

I wanted to try out the S03'S pretty much just to get a feel for 'em - sure I am not street racing, but I do hit 80+/mph on the highway on a few, but rare occasions that my Valentine 1 allows it. Still, not enough to burn out tires down to the metal in 5K miles. The treadwear sucks on teh SO3'S IT IS A MERE 220! The best tire I have found out there w/ decent treadwear is the Nitto 555 and the Toyo Proxes 4 - both with a 300 treadwear rating.
I just placed an order for the Nittos @ $125/each. I heard these shoudl be pretty good...I'll try out the Proxes 4 next.

Just don't go near any high speed banked corners with them. ;)

PS2'S are a Y rated Tire....so, I'm guessing the treadwear is not all too good on it as well. Unless, it's similar to the Michelin PS A/S - that has a 400 treadware rating...Y rated as well.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Looks Like I'll give those a shot after my Nittos burn out.

Try Kumhos ASX. Treadwear 420 and handles great around curves! Great wet and dry traction. I have about 2k miles and love them. A bit noiser than Bridgestones, but still smooth. Only cost $98 for 225/50/17 and $109 for 235/50/17

i have had my michelin sport pilots for about 9k miles at present and they are holding up well. no more tire roar as of yet and the wear is minimal. the tire is a AAA rating and the tread wear is rated at 400. they are a bit of a harder compound in comparison to the bridgestones thus making is easy to burn the tires on take off. other than that the tires have been great. they are not inexpensive though.

KillaZ,
Sorry if I missed it if you already said it, but what size are your tires? I have Pole Position 285's with 20 inch rims. So far I'm at 5000 miles with no significant wear.

might be the Z's suspension doing a feathering spell on em with magnified results do to a different tire.

Purchase a set of Good Year Eagle F1 GS D3's.
I had minor cupping noise at 7k miles and had them cross rotated and realigned by an independent tire and brake shop that specializes in sports cars.
My tires showed no abnormal wear, however, there was the "infamous roar".
I experienced much, much worse cupping problems with my prior 3 sets of Bridgestone 04 tires.

you got all the way to the cord on both front tires, and it was a surprise causing an "emergency replace"?
How does that happen without a reasonably observent owner noticing something before it gets that bad?

pep boys cheap tires.......

didn't you ever look at your tires? When walking toward the car? When washing the car?

My Michelin Pilots are going on now for about 25K miles (90% hwy). And still plenty of tread left. This is of course after the tire feathering problem being fixed (3 times a charm). The Pilots were also about a bit over $200 per tire. They handle great in normal weather but can be very slippery in wet conditions.
