Hey 280ZX

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

Swapping our controller fixed the problem. Did they check the corresponding fuse??

A:

Nope, believe it or not, the "triple meter" was never touched. I had 3 MAIN gauge clusters replaced, plus one AC Amp/unified meter assembly in the dash. The triple meter, although dead, was never the actual problem.

The triple meter is controlled by the "unified meter" which is, as I said, part of the AC Amp behind the AC controls in the dash. It is also controlled by the "unified meter control unit" (the similar names can be quite confusing, huh?) which is an integral part of the main gauge cluster. That's why both of them had to be replaced. The triple meter itself *does* have a processor in it, but on mine it never went bad.

Just check out the factory service manual to see how wiring and signals are routed through each unit at:

Wow. thanks for the clarification. I was thinking you had replaced the "triple meter" each time. My mistake ! I am saving your posts in my "future reference" file for Z problems though. As it turned out my case was slightly different. Dealer just called this afternoon and told me car was ready to go ! Say what??? Apparently they had new 'triple meter' over nighted yesterday and installed it this morning. Talk about service ! Along with the "unified meter controll unit" which they installed last week, we are back in business. Hopefully, our experience and comments might help some other poor owner in the future( maybe the individual who ends up with your trade-in).. Are you feeling guilty yet? :}

Thanks 280Z, I hope your new ride works out for you. I was looking at voltmeter today and wondering if it always showed 14+ volts. Doesn't seem to move at all after starting car. Not that I am nervous or anything now about the "electrical witch" casting a spell on my car. !
