My 1997 GMC Jimmy shifts into reverse, but will not engage into reverse. The transmission fluid is full and the fluid color looks good. The Jimmy will go forward, but when you select reverse it will not engage and it makes a whirring noise in the tranny.

That pretty much sums it up. I would just take it to a shop. Wish I had a simple cure. Good Luck.
