Why Did Muscle Cars Have Such Skinny Tires??

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

I'm watching a muscle car marathon on the speed channel, which i bet yall are too :-)

Why did the 60's/70's cars have such thin tires?? They look like they get like 5 inches tread to the ground.
A:

they didnt have the technology to make wider ones

back then they made bias ply tires and now they make radial tires. its a lot easier to make radials wider
A:

The same reason they had 8-tracks, because that was the best they had.
A:

Damn, i figured it had something to do with insurance costs or something.. Like the company's seeing wider/bigger wheels and it provoked a more "sporty" (more expensive) look.

Now i know, thanks.
A:

Na, nothing so exotic. Back then we would not have thought "wide=sporty". Bias-Ply tires were awful, be glad you missed it. But we did not no any better then.

Man, i'm 23, but i wish those cars where being made now-i love them. I never drove a big block muscle car, that must be awesome. All that power is intense, even though alot of those cars weighed 3900+lbs, they had torque for days. One day i will own one :-)
