governor/RPM limiter?

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

Today on the thruway I had the car shut off and come back on at 108 mph..Is this an RPM limiter or a governor I'ved heard of before?=,and are these things removeable?
A:

Yet again, we face the common problems.

DETAILS.

WE NEED DETAILS.

AS MANY AS YOU CAN GIVE US.
A:

what car?
A:

Did it just stop accelerating, did it jerk violently and then come back to life, or did everything turn off?
A:

04' grand am 2.2 SE..the steering wheel shook a little then at about 108 it stopped accelerating then i left off the gas pedal and it went fine again. But everything didnt shut off
A:

when was the last time the throttle body was cleaned? the shaking is naturel i think becuase i dunno but it is me or are grand am's not meant to be going 108? that seems low to have a governator usally if it had one it would make since to have one at 100 since that is considered wreck-less driving. but did anything turn off at all? cause i would think that if it was a gover/limiter that it would hover at 108 cause if it is going 108 then the engine just dies i might be a little freaked out.
A:

Probably governor or simply it had no more power left to overcome wind resistance/drag. I'm guessing it's a 4 cylinder, many cars like that basically have the same issues at around that speed.

If it is hte governor, most likely it was put in place to prevent speeds higher than the tires were meant for. To save on costs, the manufacturer uses a lesser speed rated tire, and puts the govenor on to keep you within those limits.

On the other hand you may one day find out you can pick up a few mph more going downhill or something. Then it was simply your car lacked the power to continue accelerating. This has been the case with every 4 cylinder I've owned. On flat level roads, they've peaked at 107-115. However downhill I can get them going a bit faster.

If you got a semi-violent jerk when you hit 108, it was probably fuel cut.
A:

ya it felt like it just cut off real quick then came back on...musta been limiter or fuel cut off cuz I've never felt this before
A:

wait a minute....
something's just occured to me.

my old yaris 1.0 (actually, it's 998cc) has a higher top speed (118mph before i ran out of clear road) than your 2.2 litre car?
Also, i never actually hit the speed limiter OR the rev limiter in 5th gear.
A:

im not sure, is their any way to remove these devices?
A:

you can buy a program or something to reprogram your cars computer and adjust or remove it.
A:

just so you know, is your car's engine isn't designed to be a high revving thing, then removing the limiter might not be the smartest thing to do (assuming it was the rev limiter you hit and not some sort of speed limiter).
both do similar things in a similar way (i.e cut off gas for a while) the activating factor is different.
y'know, if it's just a speed limiter then that's more or less fine but if it's there to prevent you from over revving the engine, then it doesn't take a genius to figure out what removing it can do.

as i said, i never ever hit the rev limiter in 5th, mainly because i think they never expected anyone to take the 1.0 yaris, with 67bhp i might add, anywhere near the rev limit imposed on the other gears (which i have hit on many occasions).

thing is, as it stands, you STILL don't know what it was and we are just making educated guesses as to what it was.
here's a simple no-brainer test.
take your car for a drive and run it up in first gear as far as it can go.
if it happens again at high (for your car) revs then it's the rev limiter because in first gear, it sure as hell isn't likely to be a speed limiter.
