Mitsi Evos

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

Brochures come through.
FQ360 - 0-60 in 3.9 seconds and Evo mag give it the serious thumbs up.
Hmmm....
A:

the clarkson test may of been crap as people wouldn't drive it like that, but it still went to show that the turbo is the main part of the cars performance
i prefer NA cars
A:

I thought the cams would play a part in that aswell though. I imagine they are quite high lift for a motor like that seeing as it doesn't take off til around 4k

Hmmm....
Go on.....do it
VIII FQ400 is a flying machine on the track when the revs can be kept up, but the IX FQ360 is much better by all accounts in the real world - 363 lb ft of torque as low as 3200rpm.
As Evo mag put it 'be aware that the ease with which the FQ-360 reaches and then sustains three figure speeds is bordering on the obscene.' The only negative in their opinion? Prison food!
A:

Scaffolder - Yep, read the article by Mr Catchpole too!
I'm now going to work towards an FQ-360 in black.

Oh, it must be a good car then!
The last "drivers" evo was the 6, period.
Nothing wrong with the latest one's except they look sh**te and encourage normal drivers to overstep the boundry of what may be safe for them.
A mate of mine who is a keen driver kept his for six months owing to the fact the car was absolutely "no" challenge to drive at all.
By no challenge I mean "requires no skill" to steer down a B road and it flatters to decieve because it does everything you want it to do rain or shine.
I realise this element appeals to some and there is no doubt the Lancer is a fantastic piece of engineering but I prefer to drive rather than be driven.
If you can cope with the servicing schedules and insurance/fuel bills I wish you all the best and as for 3.9 seconds to 60 yyaaaaaawwwwwwn rather sad thats all that interests some people, you might as well debate who has the largest knob.
Did I mention they looked s***e/boring etc etc
Dont get me started on Scoobys (Unless of course its a mint P1)
I await a flaming for airing my opinion
A:

No flaming but plenty of accusations being thrown about there.
So what should one drive then?
The EVO6 is a total chaviot that looks like an oversize RC.
It's grim.

Everyone's entitled to an opinion - I just don't agree with it
I loved the look of the VI when they first came out, especially the TME, but these days, in my opinion, they look old. I've seen plenty of smashed up V's and VI's to realise it's not just the later models which tempt people to overstep the mark - the problem being that any Evo or Impreza sets that marker at a very high level - get it wrong and it usually ends up in an almighty accident
0 - 60 times may be of little use in the real world, but they give an indication of in gear acceleration, which in the Evo is rather rapid, and allow for quicker, safer overtaking, or firing out and away from corners and roundabouts.
The VI had slightly narrower tyres and an earlier version of the active diff and yaw control, so it probably did give a bit more driver involvement, but I wouldn't have thought by much (for the masochistic, there's always the stripped down RS version with standard LSD's). Just press the ACD button a couple of times, and up the speeds a bit - not necessarily top speed, but corner entry and exit speeds, and the Evo gives plenty of involvement. On a damp, twisty road there's bucket loads of fun to be had - I've just had some

One can drive what one likes my preference is something with a Lotus badge on it.
Yes the 6 looks a bit dated now but it wasn't looks I was refering to. I agree with you "Mr Scaffolder" and I appreciate your candid and level headed response.
There is no doubt the latest evo is one of the quickest cars point to point putting metal costing much more to shame.
For me speed isn't the key ingredient to a good drive, dare I say it but I would probably enjoy driving a hairdressers MX5 more down a B road than a rally bred techno box.
Dont get me wrong here chaps I'm glad these rally thouroughbreds exist its just not my cup of tea.

Hmmmm - I tested an Elise 111R and had mixed feelings.
The engine needed crucifying to get anywhere fast, it sounded like a bazzed up Nova and the interior was very low rent indeed.
It's a car that shares it's engine with a Corrolla, has a choccie box interior yet costs £30k.
However the handling and steering were fantastic and nothing feels more connected to the road (apart from maybe a Caterham or Westie).
Trouble is, where do you put anything, and what happens when it's really wet?!
Don't worry - I'm not a 0-60 driver. But the Evos do accelerate like bullets from a gun and having had an R32, I very much appreciate a decent 4WD system too.
A:

Yep, I looked at Elise's and and VX220's (especially the Turbo model ) when I was changing the FQ300. Having only had fwd or awd cars in the past, I must admit I fancied a rwd motor for a change (my only previous experience of rwd being a Vauxhall Omega with distinctly worn suspension and steering which tried to go sideways on a straight motorway ). I also looked at the M3 and Porsche's, but wanting something less than a year old for sub £25k ruled them out.
In the end, because I use the car every day for work, in all weathers, the lack of space and general practicality ruled out the Elise / VX220 (don't think I could get a 2m long roll of sheeting and a couple of hundred fittings in one - no problem for my Evo, the fastest scaffold delivery wagon in the country ). For my purposes, the Evo was the best all rounder for speed, handling, practicality and cost (relatively cheap to buy compared to cars of equivalent performance, and not as expensive to run as some would have you believe).

My point exactly, a proper drivers car
I certainly wouldn't even consider an Elise if I didn't have another car for the mundane stuff.
Why did you get rid of the R32 ?
A:

I had it for a year (the R32) in London with secure parking. No problems and loved it.
Moved back to Bristol, it got done over twice in three days (trying to nick the wheels). £2500 of damage, insurance rocketed because I dared to claim and suddenly it was a serious liability so had to go.
Gutted of course but the Astra is the most hassle free car I've ever owned - A major plus at the moment.
I now live in Cornwall in about the safest place in the UK so a mad car is once again an option.
A:

I drove these on a track. Evo wasn't a patch on the STI tbh, although an FQ might be a different story....
All I'll say is that I have an STI V8 Type UK and it is the bis, very happy with it.
For Std condition it has 289bhp @4000rpm
with 301.4lb of torque @ 3990rpm
