MOT's to be every 2 years

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

Just heard on the radio that Gordon Brown has put forward an idea to change MOT's from every year to every 2 years. Trying to say it will save people money....personally I think it will just mean people will be driving more dangerous cars on the roads.
A:

Still though... MOT every two years...
A:

Increased costs for the test as its only once every two years. Also the test is more than likely going to be far more stringent, items that are now only warrant 'advisory' status will become failure points as the time between tests is longer. They would probably use it as an excuse to raise road tax prices as well ... after all you are 'saving' £40.
A:

leaving it 2 years will mean that small problems will have developed into bigger and more expensive ones instead of being fixed, more cars scrapped due to being uneconomical to repair. Replacing them with a newer car that consumes more resources to produce than it may ever use in its lifetime.... It'll also mean they might have to step up roadside checks to catch people out for an 'unroadworthy' fine.
A:

Gordon Brown has never come up with a decent idea in his Chancellor life tbqfh.
At least he's consistent
A:

So I'm not the only one who thinks it's a load of sh*te then
A:

It's a load of sh*te.
He's a load of sh*te.
/political soapbox

Have to agree. Its a sh*te idea thats going to cause more harm than good.
A:

I think it would be a gread idea, would force me into actually doing the 'advisories' and not hanging on till the day before the test on the following year, running around like a headless chicken collecting parts, getting bearings pressed etc etc!!
And some of the shi*boxes on the road are beyond beleif. Take my mk1 for example!
A:

you can almost see the insurance companies cringing!
A:

I'd be screwed to be honest, I'm lucky if i can find my mot certificate once to get the car taxed, i'll be buggered if i can keep hold of one for two years to get it taxed twice!
A:

Sounds like a daft idea to me. Christ anyone who's ever driven an older car will tell you how much they can deteriate in a year never mind two.
A:

gordon brown, trying to save us money...................its not april yet is it?!
daft idea that surely has hidden implications that will no doubt cost us more. What a load of tosh
A:

daft idea that surely has hidden implications that will no doubt cost us more. What a load of tosh I think that statement applies to most government initiatives these days, and it saddens me.
Ditto virtually anything else new introduced by an authority - purely designed to get a lever into our wallets, and cream off cash needed to fund this damn country's overhead costs.
Apparently, according to a billboard, Ken Livingstone wants to have a "discussion" with the wider public about how best to charge for pollution for bigger 4x4s and so on.
Now I'm not a rocket scientist (and if I was I'd live on the Isle of Man - well out of the way of UK tax) but something tells me that this is the time old management technique of involving the group it affects - and then barking the orders anyway, once they've let off steam.
Seen it a thousand times
A:

"new ideas, but the same old crap" springs to mind when it comes to goverment policies in this country.

New online service you don't need the MOT cert, just the registration cert
A:

Can`t see why it would be a good thing tbh.
For the average driver who knows absolutley feck all about cars it would mean the higher chance of accident/death due to poor maintenance and even for those who know cars it is a chance for an objective view to the cars condition.
I prefer if MoT is strict as it helps to keep my car safer IMO.
Perfect example of not having a clue as to maintaning a car is someone asking me why car isn`t working, lack of oil or duff sparklugs or whatever, as .....
"My car was just MoT`d recentley".
There is a difference between servicing and MoT which some can`t understand.
A:

maybe a good idea but the influx of eastern europreans may flaunt this and not bother with it making more death traps on the rd , i dont mind as my car is always legal but they will stick the cost up so further pricing me off the rd gordan does nothing to help the motorist so thats all bull**** he is a fat money grabbing **** , the end .....

Cheers that just reminded me to sorn as me tax is up on my rocco tomorrow.
A:

i really think its a bad idea!
and this is coming from someone who used to get mot`s from postman pat!!! - since computerisation it is quite difficult to get a bogus mot thus making sure vehicles at least attend a test station, changing my opinon on the mot!
i used to think i knew if my car was unsafe, but the last three mots i have had done all picked up on things you wouldn`t necessarily know was wrong by driving or servicing...
but 2 years between inspections for all vehicles on the roads????? not a good idea..... to be quite honest a year interval is too long as most silly motorists dont know what a low level brake fluid lamp is or how to spot a defective tyre!!
A:

Sounds a bit worrying because it smells of "Euro-harmonisation" - Germany has their equivalent of MoT every 2 years. They also have a comprehensive scheme where every part attached to your car must be TuV-approved. Then it will be engine swaps, they'll say the car can't have a different engine swapped into it....then it will be resprays, they will outlaw changing the colour of the car....etc
A:

MOT every 2 years does not SMELL RIGHT. Sounds like another dirty politician
trick to extort more money out of us TBH.
A:

Im agreed on this, will cause more harm than good as more unroadworthy cars will be on the road imo.
Government trying to save motorists money, pull the other one, its got bells on it

Looks lke we're possibly pandering to Brussels. I love pandering... it's so productive
A:

Heard a bit more and I think it's actually going to be for new cars. They are on about changing the first MOT to 4 years rather than 3 and then I think every 2 years after that.
