I live in the US and was wondering how come I don't know what mk number my GTi is?? It is a 2002 1.8T 5 speed and if i want advice on it do i need to refer to it by the mk2/3/4/5 number??

yours will be a mk4.
mk1 is the "rabbit" in the states.
mk1: '74 - '82
mk2: '83 - '92
mk3: '91 - '98
mk4: '98 - '04
mk5: '04 - present

More or less as they said, although I believe that in the States, the Mk1, 2 and 3 models were each continued for approx another year after production stopped in Europe.
