A&Q about 350Z
Q:
I've been looking to pick up one of these up for a while, as a robust 'throw stuff in' load carrier and also for towing when needed, but a friend mentioned that the 1.9TDi in the 88 => ~97 Passats aren't that gutsy.
Has anyone got any experience? Power & torque outputs?
I'm quite keen on sticking with the older Passat, 4-stud etc, to have swappable rims and one 195/50 15 tyre size, same as with the Mk1.
Either that or maybe a Mk3 Golf TDi Estate, but I'm not sure whether they were as powerful?
Cheers in advance!

Hey Chris
The passat's came in many variation's firstly turbo D then envolving into the TDI badge, found the following info;
1993 engine code (aaz( turbo model 75hp
1993 engine code (1Z) TDI 90hp
1995 engine code (AFN) TDI 110hp
hope that helps
cheers

Whoever is telling you that is talking pish! The passat may be pulling a little more weight with the size of the body, but its the torque (as you well know) that does the pulling. My old TDI golf was really good for towing.
All the TDI passats will have a 1Z engine (90 brake). AFAIK the 110 AFN engine wasnt fitted to the passat, but you may be lucky to find one in a MK3 as they are about.
Just make sure you get the TDI, intercooled version (you know what intercooler pipes look like right? )
A:
I take that back having looked at ETOS, the 110 is fitted to the passat - the only difference (more or less) to the 90 brake version is the turbo from what I remember
A:
Cheers Chris - just to check these 110 engines are fitted in the 88-97 models?
A:
Ah, and where does the 'Umwelt' come into this?

It doesnt, they crud, ignore them! (in case you really wanted to know, I think they are more economical versions of the regular TD, think diesel version of the 4+E)
The 110 engine is defintely fitted to the type you are looking at, engine code is AFN, regular 90 is 1Z and AHU (tho never seen an AHU), and AAZ is non intercooled John Deere version
A:
Quick 'Adjustement' to the bosch fuel pump and new injector nozzles will see a few lbft's and ponies.
Gurds
A:
The Umwelt diesel was the 75 bhp "environment" diesel.
Quite slow but plenty of torque.110 bhp in the old mk3?Must be a rare bird that.
Think the injector pumps are prone to leaking.TDi is the best one

You cant adjust the TDI ones, all controlled by the ECU.
I had larger injectors and a remapped ecu on my MK3, supposedly good for 145bhp and about 220lb ft
On another side note, you can retrofit cruise control onto the MK3 TDI - only £45 for the hardware, and a couple of minutes with vag com! Wonder if it can be done on the passat
A:
something like this would be ideal Chris
A:
Yep, thanks for looking. Tis an idea, though I'd really like something which has no repairs needed (ideally).
A:
whats going to happen to the Fester when its no longer required?
Does it require autographing with a plasma?
A:
I am open to ideas Once I've 'bayed the F*rd foot mats out to a bobble hatter, the rest is toast!
A:
can it be banger raced around a chav car park meet?
A:
My old neighbour had a 1.9TDi passat estate. We towed a residential caravan 3 miles with it too (38ft iirc). Apart from the front wheels lifting off the ground every time we tried to accelerate at any speed and grounding out the back box, it managed pretty well, it pulled it ok and set off without killing the clutch too.

I'd have to install a bangin' stereo for that!
A:
i use to regularly tow(cars) with a C15 van, so id imagine 90+hp should be more than ample
A:
As VW Singh says , you can up the power with injectors from a 110 engine (iirc an AFN) and wind the boost to around 18psi (2psi over 1Z/AHU) Ive heard that you dont need to mess with the ecu either. so no worries there.
A:
I dont know many people that have tuned the TDI engine, but as all the fuelling and injector firing is done via the ECU (and indeed TPS as its fly by wire!) there is no way of altering anything unless the ECU does it.
The larger injectors are actually from a 5 cylinder T4 van, 0.504's I think from memory. The guy to speak to about TDI tuning is Simon at Central VW. What he doesnt know about these engines with regards to larger injectors, chip tuning and different turbos isnt worth knowing
I had personal experience of this myself as I did this with my MK3 TDI a while back (about 2 years ago)

Ill be using the ones from an AFN, there .205, ive been doing research on the TDI forum, simon is on there as 'TDI RS'.

Do you have a link? Cheers.
A:
just search on there.
A:
90 bhp Passats go suprisingly well, nothing to fear in buying one of those
A:
i imagine a 90 bhp would be quite nippy , i drove my flatmares non tdi 75 bhp i think golf and was ok once at speed but acceleration best mesured in weeks not seconds was very noisy too but apparently the tdis are much quieter passat maybe even more refined . bet you could pull the qe2 withh one of those babies.
