insurance after an engine conversion?

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

Hi there,
I was hoping someone on here might be able to point me in the direction of a good insurer. The main problem I have is that when i renew i will have only 10 months driving experience and 1ncb (accelerator thingy).
My first car was a mk2 16v, with a set of cheapish coilovers it handled brilliantly but it began to feel a bit slow quite quickly. I now have a polo g40 which is much much faster but the handling just isn't up to scratch. Great road car, good in gear acceleration but its impossible to get power down round corners and it just feels a bit boaty.
A friend of a friend recently got a mk1 with a 2l16v engine in it and after a go in it i want one! Great power and handling and doesn't want to light up everytime you plant your foot.
So I rang round insurers for a quote but even with 1ncb a mk1 golf with a 150bhp engine (i said it had a 1.8t conversion as i was looking into those) was about £3000 fully comp.
Brentacre don't want to know as i dont have enough driving experience.
Adrian flux basically laughed at me even though i thought they specialised in hot hatches for young drivers?
HIC again didn't want to know.
So basically i'm stumped.

Spend your cash on making your G40 handle properly, build up your no claims and the 3k a year you save on insurance will get you the best mk1 golf 2l 16v ever! Problem solved
A:

i dont think anyone would touch you with something like that with so little experience...
..you'll have to wait like everyone else...
A:

Yep - agree it seems you either get refused, pay through the nose, or wait and get the experience.
The quicker the car you have, the more you're likely to get into a pickle, so my 2 penneth, X years on from the driving test, is don't worry, and enjoy what you've got.

Spend your cash on making your G40 handle properly
^^ I'd say that's the best thing to do
Out of curiosity how old are you? I know some of the specialist insurers won't touch people under 20...
A:

Have you tried having 2 cars, and insuring the Mk1 Golf as an occasional use car on a restricted mileage policy? That's what I do, I have regular insurance for my 'daily driver' and Footman James insure my other 2 cars, 1.6 Auto Mk1 Golf cabby and 2.0l 16V mk1 Golf GTI (prob same as you're thinking of converting). Annual premium for both cars, 4500 miles, is £370 or so.
A:

id wait ive ony got 1ncb but i can get insured on a 1.9tdi 130pd and it only cost 1600
A:

Would you not have been better with the 16 valve? Surely a 140bhp hatch wouldnt feel that slow, especially for some one driving under a year.
Should have bought a 1300 Golf for a week, then went back to the valver, would seem like a rocket ship then!!
A:

A Mk2 16V as a first car, I wish... I had 4 other cars from two 1.3's and two 1.6's before i had a 16V (Corrado).
I know "youngsters" don't want to know but you need to learn so much when you first pass your test and having a fast car just means any mistakes are bad ones?
If you get a fast car from day one then where is there to go. I had that in a VR6 Corrado and what do you get that is better that you can afford?
I've driven a 1.6 Polo, 1.6 Scirocco now 1.4 Polo because of points on my licence and spending the money on my house so when I had a 16V Corrado for a couple of drives I thought it was a rocket ship too.
A:

Yeah i know a 16v isn't a slow car but then again its not all that fast. I thought perhaps specialist insurers may take previous cars into account and that i've had no accidents etc (touch wood). But like you say lack of experience seems the main factor although i've done a lot of milage.
Oh and i'm 20 by the way.
I'd have 2 cars if i had the space. I live at home and there are 3 cars including mine so no more parking space left without winding up the neighbours.
The reason i don't really want to spend time and money on getting a g40 to handle well is because a golf is so much better to begin with. And there is something special about them, when i sit in one they feel so solid and i get all excited.
A sort of comprimise might be to look at a golf g60 but i don't think i'd like it LHD.
Thanks for the replies, looks like i will just have to go for a sensible option for once.
