A&Q about 350Z
Q:
Well today I set about taking of my wheels for winter.
All goes well, get to the last wheel......and the key for the McGard nut buckles.
I thought they looked a bit naff when I bought them "hmm, they dont look as if they go in very far" i thought, but the bloke assued me it was fine.
Alas, it isnt.
It was seated correctly etc, but its buckled and wont fit in the nut anymore.
So now i have to register, then order a replacement, then really hope to god that the nut head itself isnt damaged so that I can get them off.
This is the second time this has happened to me

Hi,
I'm having similar problems with the VAG Sport Rader bolts I bought from VW about six months ago. They are crap. Went to remove a wheel the other day (Luckily at home) and when I got to the locking bolt the key just kept slipping in the locking bolt before I'd put much pressure on the wheel brace. So got my Dad to help (a mechanical engineer) but no it wasn't me being stupid they are crap. With one of us trying to undo the bolt and the other pushing the end of the key in it still kept slipping. If I'd been on the road I'd have been in the brown stuff. Like you say they are not very deep and this is why they slip.
Been on to VAG and they admitted they are not up to much and are sending a new key just in case the one I have is wrong.
I was going to get some McGard bolts instead but now think I'll get some of the old type I have on my other cars as they have never given me much trouble.
Hope you sort it out okay
Regards
Loki

The McGard obviously are decent....everybody reccomends them but I genuinely don't see why the key patterns arn't a bit deeper!
Incidentally - It was the VAG ones that I had on previously where the key just sheared off under pressure (3 prong key type). Had to get the bolts removed by a garage.
I'm just gona stick with the BBS locking nuts, much better design!! Although I dont have any kind of code for that so i'm in the brown stuff if i lose the key!!
I've emailed McGard and will send off for a replacement asap.
Just sods law, got up early especially.
So beware McGard users!

I've had mcgard wheel bolts for years and they get undone and done up a lot as they're on my trackcar and have never had a problem with them.

Are yours the same type? with just the little sort of ridge bit that goes into a recess on the bolt? bearly a few mm deep?

I spent all day wednesday getting my locking wheel nuts off.
Honestly, id prefer some fecker to nick my wheels, instead of going through another day like that again...

I seem lucky enough to have never encountered problems with locking nuts, always a first for something i guess....
ROCK ON!!!! \m/
