Which golf handles the best?

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

i voted for the mk1, ive owned a mk2 16v, driven a mates mk3 vr6 and borrowed my cousins mk4 turbo for a weekend, as for the mk5 well ive been out round coombe in one of our mk5 gti turbo race cars and there a bit special!!!! with a cage in the cars are awsome, phenominal amounts of grip and so solid. as a comparison my my mk1 feels so twitchy and really on the limit all the time when driven hard. i should have blaged mike to let me have a drive, thinking about i should have voted for it 2 in the poll.
mk5's are the way you just dont know it yet
A:

Deffo the Mk11 for me, although the Mk1 felt crisper into the corners the Mk11 overall had better handeling, and is easier to anticipate and correct when things erm shall we say don't go to plan (ouch! my Mk1 written off on a bend with a tree!!)
Have driven all except Mk5. Later cars not as good on geometry...
A:

in terms of accuracy this poll will never come anywhere near, we all have our different driving styles and preferences.
The best handling car ive ever driven was my fathers Integrale evo1, the only car that has ever come close to that was my mk2 g60, running polybushes and koni coilovers.
ive not driven a golf on standard suspension so i guess my comments are void in this instance?
A:

have owned a few mk2's and driven a mk3 and can honestly say seating position in the mk3 is better ride is more refined but for out and out driveability and road testing it's the mk2 by a long way
A:

having driven all of them i would say it goes mk5 mk2 mk1 mk4 then mk3 .
my mk5 will **** my mk1 but i feel that this is coz the mk1 is too hard for the road !
A:

Unless you've driven all 5, I can't see how you'd be in a posisition to vote tbh.
I've driven mk1-4 Golf GTI's and prefer the older models, but can't comment on the mk5, which could easily be better than the lot. As it stands I prefer the MK2 over the MK1 (just), then find the mk3 and 4 pretty similar in that, in standard form, they're a tad wallowy and uninspiring.
A:

I guess this poll kind of shows that peoples opinions on which one handles the best depends a lot on that persons driving style. I would say the mk5 had the most grip out of them all, but the closer you got to the limit the more the leccy sh*te compensated for you, now any normal road driver would just carry on driving it like that (like my ex) but i couldn't help thinking about what happens once you push it past the limits, which are already being increased by all the gizmos on the thing, if you are past the normal limit, then past the limit + extra, what happens when it lets go? you have no grip left to try and get it back and things are gonna get messy.
I like my cars to be twitchy and very responsive which a lot of people don't like, hence why i went for the mk1 in the poll, mainly because it's simplicity and lack of flab make it so, the mk2 is similair but just a tad more refined imo so looses some of it's edge. Mk3? anyone who says they don't handle is talking pish, even in standard form, yes they are soft and wallowy but they give a lot of grip, lower and uprate them and they can keep with a mk1 or mk2 on the twisties. Mine never struggles to keep with my mates mk2 (in fact he gets in my way most of the time) however show them a straight and he's off.
The mk4 is just, erm, well, a mk3 with more flab and a bendy rear beam. The front end feels good on a mk4 but it's the back that feels like it floating about all the time.
That's my opinion on them all, if you disagree then...
a: We all have our opinion and are welcome to them, and
b: I really couldn't give a flying f*ck
c: see b:

In standard form I've no idea as I've only ever driven a standard Mk 3 16v, standard Mk 2 8v, standard Mk 5 GTI and standard Mk 4 R32.
In modified form however, surely it depends on what you do with it. You can make it handle however you like.
A:

It depends, do you mean handles best in the sense of ...
1) How it 'handles' itself when thrown about ?
2) How it 'handles' itself when cruising along the motorway ?
... both very different scenarios.

//slap!
That'll be number 1 then, the one most people think of when you say "how does it handle" to them.
Tbh, not many people have ever answered that question with "fine on the motorway but wobbley when you show it a corner" den.
A:

iv driven mk2 to mk5, mk3 is really cr*p on a factory set up but im sure with a bit of custom work carried it would be a bit better.
i drive a mk2 and really enjoy it so i voted for it.
A:

Mk2's for the win! Best Mk!
Jonny.

Aye, sorry. Not really with it today to be honest.
A:

The 'best' is not on the list, that would be the 2 door MK2 Jetta.
A:

I voted for the mk1,I have owned a mk1gti, mk2gti, and driven a mk 3 and for me the mk1 wins (or my Scirocco would) the mk1 chasis is just so nimble.
A:

Well I know it sure as **** aint a MK4
Have you driven an R32 ?
A:

Of course I'm going to say a modded mk2 is 'the best' but that's only 'cos I have a 'fairly' modded mk2..
Of all the standard GTIs I've driven the mk5 was far superior to standard earlier GTIs
Was fortunate to share IanVs modded mk1 at the 'ring in the summer, it's nothing like as 'easy' to drive quickly as my mk2, but very rewarding once you get used to it. Pretty hopeless in the wet though.
A:

Unless you've driven all 5, I can't see how you'd be in a position to vote tbh.
Exactlement!
A:

speaking of 2 door jettas, when was the last time anyone saw one, i can`t remember myself tbh...
A:

Someone on here has one, it's not finished yet though.
Next millenium I think it'll be done, eh lanky!?
