A&Q about 350Z
Q:
I was doing a little drivability tuning on the car and it was going well. I decided to quit for the day, and on the way back to the house(appartment) I noticed my oil pressue gauge was about 1/4 filled with oil. Not good, the gauge was leaking.
I pulled the gauge cluster to find an oil mess in the cluster. I had to take it apart, clean it up and fix the oil gauge.
I took the gauge apart and the capilarytube was leaking because it was not soldered well.
I began the repair, and I figured it it all went to crap I could buy another gauge. I got the gauge from the Pegasus catalog. The part is a race teck gauge, and after taking it apart it wa no wonder why it leaked. One would think for $139.00 for the gauge you would get a quality part, ut not in this case.
So I resoldered the capilary tubing and it works fine. I put the temp part of the gauge back together, and made the needle adjustment with boiling water. I checked the temp with a digi temp gauge at different temps and the gauge was dead on.
Then on to the oil pressure, I installed it in the car and made the needle adjustment in the car, it was good.
Then all I had to do is reinstall everything, what a pain in the neck. Reinstalling the boost gauge and oil gauge was not fun, it wasn't fun the first time either. But I got it completed, now on to the stereo, and figuring out why it draws 50mA when it is off. I am thinking a cap has dried out and is beginning to short. So now I will take the stereo out and fix that also.
Sometimes things just go bad, and I guess this was my week for fixing that kind of stuff. Took me all day to get that completed, and I removed the cluster the day before, alot of time. Oh well it's a Z what can you say LOL little B!tch Zelda LOL.

The Gauge is a dual oil pressure and oil temp gauge. Both gauges are capilary units. Needless to say it was not the easiest gauge to install in the stock cluster.
I ran the temp line to the oil pan, in the stock spot for the ZX, well until I got the comp pan, and now it is located on the side of the pan.
I ran steel braided line for the oil pressure part of the gauge as I did not want any leaks, now isnt that funny.
The steel braided line in a -3 teflon configuration did work very well, and still does. A little pricy, but well worth the money for the reliability of the line seeing it is going under my dash, and a leak would be a real mess to say the least. I had to deal with a car that had a leak under the dash. The car smelled like oil, crap caked everywhere, total mess.
I am just glad I noticed it quickly before it had a chance to fill up the gauge cluster with oil, that would have sucked bad.
I generally do the repairs to most of the stuff on the car, and I guess this is no different then any other. I just wish the quality was there from the start for my 140.00 investment.
I like the old capilary systems because they dont require any power to work and at times that can be very important. I setup the cooling fan the same way.
I like to keep it simple, as simple as possible, and anything I can use to avoid the use of a source power to operate in my opinion is best.
The gauges turned out very accurate, at least the temp gauge. I think I got the oil pressure off by 3-5psi which for me is accurate enough. I get 10psi of oil pressure when the engine is up to temp.
The best way I could have tested the gauge is to pressurize the gauge with a known pressure and then install the needle at that pressure. Then go back and test different pressures for accuracy. I just may do that just to see what the readings are, but as it stands now, I have pressure at idle when it is hot and that is what I am looking for. So having 10psi on the gauge @ idle and in reality having 15psi @ idle is good enough for me. The temp now there is a critical measurement, and it is correct.
