Ok, so I am on my honeymoon trip which consist of a driving scenic trip through Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Whyoming. I am in Durango now, and am sorta unsure what route to take next. I want to hit as many fishing streems and Lakes as possible, with maintaining a somewhat straight line to Yellowstone. SO anyone have any ideas? I want to camp, and prefferebly no campgrounds, just out in the open, next to NO ONE, like IM used to. So can anyone familer with CO give me some ideas? Oh, to make this car related, Im in my 95 toyota 4 runner, and shes running great, 20 miles to the gallon, and all!!!!

i'm in durango too!!! there are lots of good place...la plata canyon is my favorite for camping...head towards cortez and right when you drop into hesperus take a right towards the mountains, as for fishing many people just tear up the animas (river right through town)...but not soo hot for fishing now since it's runoff season. where are you staying here?

I loved Jackson Hole area for fishing. there is a nice pond area and stream right on the edge of town thats great for fly fishing right along the main road.
there are many nice lakes and streams around there on the way to Yellowstone.

I don't know if is the season but one of the most scenic train rides in the planet takes off from downtown Durango to Silverton, people travel great distances to ride that thing.
Have you shared the left lane today?

Great fishing between durango and telluride. I am a tx resident but went all over CO from telluride during a few summers. San Juan has good fly fishing, not sure what kind of fishing you are doing. That area of CO is probably the nicest place to be in the U.S. this time of year.

At least go over the pass between Silverton and Ouray, then make a circle back to Durango stopping in Telluride.

I lived in Cortez back in 78 and wished I was into flyfishing as I am now. The san juan is supposed to be excelent. I would think that most sterams hold fish in that area.Th route thru Wolfcreek pass is pretty cool too.Have fun and take pics.

on your way north be sure to hit the town of Estes Park and check out the Stanley Hotel on the N. E. of town. its pretty cool it was the insperation for Stephen Kings book The Shining. it also has a mint Stanley Steamer car in the lobby. i went white water rafting a few years ago down by salida and durango --it is some of the most beautiful country side that ive seen, and ive spent tons of time in Manitou Springs-another really senic area at the base of Pikes Peak. Enjoy your honeymoon trip !!!!!!!

I worked a season in the Tetons and Yellowstone and recommend you hit Mountain High in Jackson if you like pizza, take the inner road through the park in Tetons and do the hike into paintbrush canyon, make the lower loop at Yellowstone so you get to see Old Faithful, lake Hotel and both the hot pots and the geyser basin.
I had problems in Yellowstone with vapor lock between the elevation and the heat. If your car can survive Colorado though, you're probably good to go.
