diesel heater core/radiator = intercooler?

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

so a friend of my mom's was going up and down about how "you kid's get ripped off to much. they make you guys pay way too much for stuff these days"
He is a bit older than my friends and I (late 50s?) and I have spent several hours turning wrenches with him so I'm confident he knows his ****....
The other day I was like hey Jesse did you see the new intercooler I bought?
I could hear his sigh from the other side of the room. And he sounded hurt when I told him I payed 175 for it.
He said. "listen, all you gotta do is get a heater core or radiator from a diesel..."(at this point I'm already going WTF really?!?!) and I don't remember the rest of the sentence. something about cutting stuff in half.
Anyways is it any bit true you can use a heatercore or radiator from a diesel vehicle as a radiator?

well....ya.
technically radiators, heater cores, AC condensors and evaporators, and intercoolers, are all radiators.
An intercooler works in the exact same way that a radiator works.
You could even use an oil cooler for a radiator if you felt so inclined, but it wont flow much or be optimized......
Ask him where you could find an Aluminium heater core with a bar and plate design optimized for air to aluminum heat transfer.

well in that case do yourself a favor and do some research on the types of heat transfer.

Here's the thing.
Radiators aren't designed to flow nearly as many CFM as an intercooler is.

A:

And intercoolers, the good one's, are designed to minimize the loss of boost across their core. A diesel radiator designer could care less about loss of boost pressure.
He's a little bit right and a LOT wrong.

Yeah those typewriters are just so expensive now days vs back then, oh wait a minute we have computers now dont we? doh! :P
$175 is cheap as for an intercooler, give him a quick jab to the throat lol

keep in mind.. a radiator has a pressure cap...
if you run more than the cap is rated .. IE 12psi.. guess what?! you have yourself a pop off valve.. and itll bleed all the pressure off into your reservoir.. yay! a container will pressurized air! haha that would be sweet
anyway.. it wouldnt work..
Ebay has intercooler for $40 .. buy it and be done with it

You can certainly forage around and find a lot of things that will "work" as long as you're poor, clever, lucky and don't need it quickly, and have some fabrication skills. A diesel 18-wheeler radiator probably would work if you cut it in half and then re-welded the core to the size you need. Tell him that the great depression is over and we don't want to use rope instead of a fan belt either, LOL.
Of course it is true that you pay a lot for customized hardware that is designed and engineered to work without thinking. You open the box, strap it on the car, and that's why you pay more.

Blah Precision 750 intercoolers are down to $350 with a 1 psi drop at right around 40psi that will supports 750+hp **** being cheap buy something good.
