The Kind of Customer Service I Like

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

I took some chrome plastic vents to a local place to see if they'd redo them. He said he couldn't but we started talking about some places that may & the $200 it would cost. He then said "Let me take a closer look at one." After a second he says for me to follow him. We walk back into his shop & takes some glass cleaner & then some compound and starts rubbing away.
We're talking for a few minutes, maybe 5, and by the time we're done he tells me that these only need to be polished real well. Half of one looked great, except for the part that needed a toothbrush. But anyway, the guy was really nice and spent about 15 additional minutes with me even when it looked like he wasn't going to get any business. He was talking about his 85 300ZX, my 240, & how we both think the value will go up soon because there's very few 240Zs left in our area.
I've had my valve cover in the back of my gas hog SUV for a while so I took it out and gave it to him. I told him I wanted it powder coated so he looked it up in his price list. It said $75. He asked me "How does $50 and pick it up next week sound?" I just thought I'd share that there are some people left that are good to deal with. He'll get more business from me based solely on the fact that he was still polite & outgoing even when it looked like he wasn't going to be able to sell me anything.

Great find!
Always refreshing to find someone who still practices good customer service and can also think out of the box. The guy sounds as if he's building his business one customer at a time.

$75 for a valve cover?!?! i just had a sway bar, control arms, tension rods, and the crossmember coated for 80 bux for all of them. he sounds like a nice guy though.

A:

That's a good price for a valve cover. The aluminum outgasses so much that they might need to do them a couple times to get it right.

yeah, my Sub was in for muffler/tailpipe last week. I told them that the
gas pedal has always been stiff and felt it was still the linkage at the throttle body...just asked for suggestions; Muff/tailpipe was $288 (only $54 was labor).
...and he didn't charge me anything for diassembling linkage and re-ataching; said improvement was so slight when he checked thru it that
he charged me nothing....someone said a washer behind the spring might help(?) Good to hear someone else is finding shops with a little extra effort, regardless....they just may get work again from me. (Actually, he probably had a little time left on the 2-hr labor portion of exhaust, but didn't stop)

Today I had a highend lexus shop try to diagnose a starting problem I'd been having on my old ls400. They couldn't recreate the problem and instead of telling me 'too bad' like most shops would, they kept it another day trying. Ran a bunch of tests and found out it was a 600 fix if I wanted to do it. Got talking to the owner how I'm a UT college student and he said I should sell the car or go at it myself, and he only charged me 40 bucks for all the diagnosing labor, fuel pressure tests, etc.
