An L-20 is basically the same motor as an L28 without 2 cylinders. I would stay with a 4 banger or maybe a V-6.
Physically, I don't think the inline 6 would fit without some refabbing of the firwall to keep the harmonic balencer out of the radiator (with electric fans).

The '85 Model had the NAPS-Z 24 engine...8plug. L6...LOL...some fab work there...can be done if you are talented.
Great trucks and confirmed that Nissan could build some work horses..
I had one...it went from this 103hp beast:
to this little 250hp missy:

Well, I don't know anything about em yet, but my dad just bought one so I'm sure I'll get to know them pretty well soon enough. He bought it in Belgium and paid about $1400 for it. 100k miles or so I think.
I would say go for it if it's in good shape.

Bought a black 85 4x4 king cab truck in 85 new, sold it 3 years ago for 1400 - wish I had kept it. Only had 3 problems in 140k miles, carb had to be replaced, speedo oil seal at tranny - oil crept up cable and leaked into truck, distributor nylon drive gear disintigrated - only time it stranded me.
Was a great truck, not much power - especially up hills....

Those trucks are wicked fun off-roading. My dad owned an '86 about 10 years ago that I inherited when I turned 16. We had that thing for like 6 years, my brother drove it, I drove it (and you know how teenagers drive). We put so many miles on it, beat the crap out of it off roading and the only problems we ever had was minor problems with the carb. I even rolled in like 5 times down a hill when I misjudged the integrity of a road and walked away with a hurt ego and a broken windshield! Hell of a good truck if you ask me! I will agree with JPZX though, It didnt have a whole lot of power going up hills.
