Idling for hours and fuel consumption @ idle

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

To preface, the car in question is a 1999 Accord V6 (3.0L).
Okay, so my job requires me to sit in the car for hours at a time in near unbearable heat. I need to know how long I can safely let the car idle without worrying about abusing the car. I have a friend who says keep an eye on the temp gauge and you'll be fine, but Dad says hot spots will begin to form in the cylinders and I should shut it off every 15 minutes or so.
Also, is there any kind of formula to calculate what the fuel consumption rate is at idle?

I hand out information about the newest neighborhood of a local land developer. High pay, low hours, very little effort. The tradeoffs--summers are miserable and you're bored to tears all the time.

......shut it off!
Or, get a diesel....they LOVE to sit and idle for hours and they LOVE heat!!
Your fuel, however will be measured in gallons per HOUR, same as aircraft engines when the rate of consumption is a steady rate at a certain rpm.
Pitfalls? Fouled plugs, carbon buildup, and yes, overheating. The water pump, at idle, may not have sufficient flow necessary to cool at low rpm, and a faster rpm (1500ish) is probably a better speed to maintain consistent coolant flow through engine.
It'll be running richer too, so add heat buildup to the catalytic convertor, and soot collection in same. (and don't park over any combustible materials ! ! !)

YEAH! You might want to keep the idle a little extra high to make the coolant circulate better! About 1,200-1,500. Norm K

Not only that but higher idle will also provide better AC operation.

First of all, nothing will probably happen.
That being said, I'd turn the car off as the wear to the ignition is very minimal. I had a sales job and probably started my 99 accord ex 100x+ a day for 3 months.
Turn it off, get a diesel, or worry about it.

Well, followed Norman's advice and kept the idle between 1250 and 1500 today, worked like a charm! AC stayed cool and temp was rock steady.
Car seemed confused the first time I went from Park to Drive though, rumbled and rocked. Any meaning to that?

A:

No, it's probably going to do that in an automatic with the idle higher than normal. Once again, don't worry about it. As long as you aren't in 'too' high of rpms, it won't hurt the transmission. You usually have to do something stupid on purpose to mess up a honda accord.

I had a friend who I worked with that had a mid eighties honda civic, the starter went out and he left it running for more than five days until he could get a new one, not really relevant but it was pretty funny at the time

Hey NLINE6 that is pretty funny, the only thing would make it funnier is if he had a straight drive and could have just push started it instead.
