A&Q about 350Z
Q:
we have been really busy at work...so i don't have time to fix this one...boss said just take it in and get it worked on....truck was just running rough in need of a tune up. took it in...picked it up the next day. bill total was 568 bux.
few days before a spark plug blew out of the hole and broke the individual coil pack on top of the plug (02 f250 gas) i replaced the coil pack and we were able to drive it.
so i pick it up from the shop and read over the outrageous bill...they said they had to replace the same coil pack cause it was burned. i told them i wanted to see the part ( for some reason they saved a "burned" coil pack. they bring it out and the part is brand new...it told the guy that it wasn't burned at all...and that anything resembled melting was where the clear epoxy they spread over the top had gotten a little on the plug area....and that this wasn't a genuine ford part...his response with a dumbfounded look on his face "oh....it isn't?!" i said yeah...you didn't notice how all the others said ford on top? and i even told you guys when i dropped it off that i replaced that same coil pack 2 days before with one from autozone. then i asked if he even tested it...he said no that it was burned.
so anyway, off the coil pack is a rubber boot that attaches to the plug....the one i replaced came with a boot...he said he pulled the boot off and put it on another...but they still charged us for replacing 8 boots at $12 a piece!
they also charged for spark plugs at 9 each! and these are napa parts.
labor for replacing the plugs...just poppin on the rubber boots to the existing coils and replacing the fuel filter was 4 hrs and total was $270 bux!
what a joke...so they replaced a perfectly fine coil and charged for the new one, displayed heir ignorance, charged us for a boot we already bought....and were slow in replacing the spark plugs and just putting in a new fuel filter. this is why i don't go to mechanics.

Call the BBB and report them.

Don't call the BBB first.
First talk to the manager of the shop. If the manager of the shop will not fix the mistake, then file a complaint with the BBB. Make sure to include all paperwork, and do not include anything but the facts.
A:
BBB is useless, they won't keep your complaint on record as long as the business responds to your complaint with a letter, regardless of whether it is resolved. Don't waste your time.

1) Is the problem fixed?
2) It ain't your money, so who cares how much they charged? You paid them to fix it and they did.
3) What did you expect? If it was Ford you took it to, or even a shop, they don't give a hoot what you did. They track down the prob and fix it. Are you POSITIVE your Autozone coil was still good? Might be that inferior part did fry — after all, the first one did. It would have been nice if they found the CAUSE the coil packs were blowing, but again — did they fix the prob or didn't they?
4) This also why I don't go to mechanics, either. So next time take it to a different guy, and keep doing that until you get a halfway honest one.

ZX-AE,
Why would you think about quitting being a mechanic because of what another place or another person did?. If your joking cool. If not be for real.
All you need to do is the best job you can, be honest about what your doing, learn as much as you can, don't be afraid to ask questions. The only dumb question is the one you don't ask.
I have been a mechanic for 20 years, if something isn't bad I don't say it is. If it needs to be fixed recommend it, let the vehicle owner decide what they can fix or whats important to fix.

the part was good...they guy was too dumb and mistaked epoxy for burned plastic...which it was obvious it wasn't even burned....cause burned plastic is all bubbly and what not. the ONLY reason he said be replaced it is becuase he thought it was burned. and the pack didn't burn out...the plug worked it's way loose (driving hundereds of miles down oil field roads) and it broke the mounting tab...so easiest to get a new one. i don't know if the problem has been fixed...the problem was random
i wouldn't complain if he wasn't a complete jackass. and if it were my car (which would never go to any mechanics here) heads would have been rolling...the only reason they didn't is because it wasn't my money and they shop paid...but it pisses me off that they are grossly incompetent and get away with it.
