83 280zx turbo lifters noise

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

my lifters make alot of noise for about 20 sec. then quite down, I called a guy in washington today and he said that he's got mech. lifters for that car. it takes a adapter ,the adjuster and adapter is made for that car. Cost about 184.00 has anyone heard of this? I've used sea foam and every other product and nothing works.

I would think that replacing the lifters would be more of a headache then replacing the head.
Progress:
Z32 Had to sell for DD 06 Sentra :(
S30 one of these days I will get around to putting it all back together.

what weight oil are you using? sounds like its too thick and is taking a bit to get pumped to the top end. manufacturers used lighter weight oil to get oil to the top end quicker to reduce valvetrain wear maybe you are using castrol 50 wt and its just too gooey to make it up there quickly to stop the ticking. if the ticking stops it sounds like its oil feed that is the problem. i know chevys sound like that sometimes and its oil taking its time to get up there. just a guess maybe you can tell us what oil you are using.

20-50 weight valvoline

that sounds way to heavy especailly in the cold weather we are having now. maybe try 5w30 and see if it gets better. depends on where you are i guess, its cold here! LOl!

That couldn't possibly do anything, The oil is what lubricats and cleans them thats why theres an oil filter.

i'm in the middle of using the timesert adapters to change mine from hydraulic to solid lifter. just borrowing the lifters from an old N47. Got the inserts for about $36. alex280 did a write up on it. probably search "P90a" and find it eventually.

I'm working from memory but this is in the archives. Assuming you're talking about the P90A head with hydrolic lifters: 1. You can pull the lifters & clean them. 2. You can convert to solid lifters. Track down post referenced above. Either option is cheaper & easier than pulling the head. Perhaps you want to start with cleaning & move on if that doesn't fix it.
Anyone can drive a new car.

Over time they get gunked up, a simple clean in most cases will reduce or eliminate lifter ticking.

are they the same lifers in a 300? why not put them in there instead of using recleaned 30 year old units? there has to be more 300 parts out there that are newere, maybe even still available new.
but from the way it goes away and him running 50 weight oil in cool weater im still thinking lighter weight oil will stop it altogether.

Some people in the US use this stuff called Seafoam, we dont get it here so I cant vouche for it but it's worked for some people to clear up lifter noise if you cant be bothered taking them out and cleaning them.
