A&Q about 350Z
Q:
Here's what happened. While I was messing with the radio wiring harness I accidently left one of my hot wires untaped. I later got into the car and was just taking it for a drive around the block. While backing up the hot wire hit the metal for the radio. Since then m y dash lights have not worked. Searched and found that the fusable link may have melted and is causing each new fuse I put in to blow when I turn the running lights on. Today I picked up a new fusable link and replaced it. Well, the same thing is happening. Anyone know what else it could be. I've made sure there where no other hot wires floating around as far as I could tell.

How far down the line did you check the original "hot" wire? Maybe some insulation melted off somewhere...

there is a hot wire that one of the PO split into two but I covered that up with electrical tape. it goes to the cigarette lighter which I won't need anyways should I pull one of those off and just run one hot back to my radio? Oh and the radio/cigarette fuse is not blown just the dash/running light fuse. are they at anypoint connected?

I don't remember if the cig lighter was a "switched" power source on the 280ZX's. I doubt if the lights would be on a common circuit. Maybe a common ground somewhere though...

The wires for the dash lights read as grounds when the lights are off. My guess is you have a hot line for the lights run into a ground on the radio. Need to recheck your wiring. The P.O. on my 77 did this same thing. Only he cut the wiring harness up to fix his simple screw up.

Same thing happened to me after I almost hit a deer. Hot wire hit the signal wire that travels directly to the back of the CD player. ZAP!! No more sound system. Fooey.

I do want to thank each of you for your advice. Naviathan may have just solved my problem, however I have been unable to verify. See my lights were working before I started messing with my radio harness which at the time had no radio and the cigarette lighter was disconnected. One of these wires does go to what is supposed to be the ground for the cigarette lighter and could be the cause. I will tell you all for sure when I get the chance. Thanks everyone for your help.
