Ok, this has been killing me... (Moved from Tech)

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

Not exactly Z related, but this is really killing me. What possible purpose could those huge holes in ricer rear bumpers have?
It looks freakin rediculous! One of the kids down the street did it to his neon!
First, he tried to get me to race him, and I ended up spending 1/2 of the light laughing at his fart-can sounding exhaust, and the other half trying to figure out what those stupid holes are for...

Some people do it to allow air to pass through the bumper rather than be trapped infront of it. From what I've heard as your car splits the wind the air that travels around the car creates a suction affect behind the car. Imagine dropping a stone into a calm lake, after the stone breakes the water the water quickly rushes back to replace the displaced water. If you cut holes in the bumper it allows the air to exit from a higher area replacing more of the lost air and decreasing the suction. I've seen on some race cars ( mugen accord to be exact ) where they routed the exhaust in the mid section of the car for the same purpose. It makes alot more sense on a drag car or track car verses a daily driver.

god what a riced out car!
the bumper acts as a parachute at high speeds.
the holes releave the high pressure behind the bumper. although a proper diffuser can do better.

Could be they are trying do duplicate lightening holes. Material removed form big heavy solid members to save weight.

"cut outs for the fake rocket exhausts"
Yea right, more like cutouts for the JTOW rockets

Wow, I still cannot believe that someone expects a neon to go fast enough for this to take affect! (Btw, no pictures unfortunately, I'll see what I can do tomorrow).
I can kind of understand the purpose, but would it not be just as easy to design the bottom of the car with a deflector to fix this problem? Similar to the way the new Ford GT works?
