A&Q about 350Z
Q:
Hi all I have been away for a while after I sold my Z..been lurking though and i know this is the best group of people to ask
well I was given a car with a sbc 350 with a carb says weber on the body and carter competion on the top?
it runs out of fuel, runs on a level road but if you give it a quick stomp it falls on its face, if you go a up an incline it bucks and soons will stall will start with a squirt of starting fluid, but will die shortly after.
looks like a mechanical fuel pump .
just looking for a starting point to fix...don't wan't to come home on a hook...again :(
Thanks

Check the bottom of the fuel pump for tell-tale drips of fuel (wet) that come from the small weep hole if the diaphram cracks.......
Same for smell of gas in the oil in case it's leaking into the crankcase....
The pump is a cheep easy replacement, and I'd start there ............

If my reply sounds offensive, TAKE IT AS HUMOR !! MUUUUHAHAHAHAHA !!

If U need to R & R the fuel pump, learn about using the front bolt to hold the pushrod up.

Have you checked the carb floats to be sure they are moving and are not stuck. Sounds more like a carb problem than a pump problem. There is also probably a filter screen on the inlet to the carb. Make sure that is clean. I had a similar problem on my boat last year 2.5L Chevy I/O. It would idle fine, drive fine as long as I didn't give it gas too fast. I replaced the pump to no avail. Took off the inlet hose to the carb and found the screen was about 80% clogged. Enough fuel would get by to run, but when WOT was asked for, there wasn't enough flow to make it go. Also had trouble restarting.
As far as the sticking floats; I don't remember for sure if the Carter carbs use floats or if it's the metering rods. Either way, make sure everything is clean. Fuel pump you can check easy enough. Just remove the hose from the carb and crank the engine a few times. The gas should come out pretty steady and quick.

Thanks for the ideas everyone, if i could get three mikuni's to run, you would think a single carb should be easy.

Oh yeah,...
Those old Carter AFB-s have crappy tin or plastic floats too. If they bend, leak or get soggy, the fuel level will drop. Always install an inline filter before the carb. too.
