Why they call them Saab

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

A friend of ours stopped by last night about 8:00. She is a young woman w/ a 2 year old in her Saab 9.5, and said her power steering went out and all these lights went on in her dash. I asked her how far back, and she said about 3 miles. Temp was almost pegged on her 2.3 liter turbo, but I don't think it hurt the motor.
Sure enough, the idler pulley bearing went out and threw the serpentine belt. Now for the name part: That is the sound you make when you find out it will take THREE DAYS to order a simple idler assembly. That sucker is not within a 2 hour drive of here, we checked everywhere. Her husband had just spent $800 to get the throttle body replaced, and the Saab dealership had said they would replace the belt and idler for an additional $400. Looks like you have to pull the upper motor mount to get to the belt.
Her car is in my shop, told him to get the parts and we would put it in if he helped me.
Damn I love my Z after looking at that car. I have spent less on three parts cars than he did on one throttle body.
1983 280ZX N/A: 98% rust free, 118,000 actual miles.
1982 280ZX Turbo. $250 Parts car that was better than the rustbucket.
1983 280ZX Turbo. Hopeless rust case. The more I fixed, the more I found.

Sounds like some of the dealership stories I have heard where the car goes in the shop for one expensive repair, and comes out needing numerous other expensive repairs within a few months.....you draw your own conclusions.

Eurotrash cars are always big $$$ to maintain, why is anybody surprised?
Rusty but running.
Polish cell phone and two tubes of Aluma-seal.
And, now we are historic.

on my mom's 97 buick park avenue ultra, you have to remove the motor mount to change the belt. to remove the motor mount you have to remove the pressed on power steering pump pulley, and unbolt the water pump pulley. not to mention, it seems they only like using Torx sockets and male Torx studs. dang!! took me like 2 days to change the belt plus $20 in new bits and sockets.. oh well

Because SnAABs are in SAABs, and they will pay to see SAAB written on their car? :-D

This is the same mentality that has people hating Hondas because because they are driven by ricers. Brilliant.

I have owned 2 Saab 9000 Turbos and they are great cars. I did most of the maintenence work myself just using a regular Haynes manual. I was never stranded by either of these cars. They were very fun to drive (esp the turbos).
Now they are owned by GM, and have no idea what that's done to quality.
A top of the line Saab MSRP is about 41K. You can easily spend that much on a Maxima.
The old 900s and 9000s were definitely quirky cars, but very reliable. Don't know about the new ones.

gm owns 1/3 of the shares of saab, they do not own saab. the 9-3 and 9-5 are still built in sweeden. the 9-2x is subi crap and the 9-7x is a glorified trailblazer. their are very fiew manufacturers that arn't owned partially by another company, includeing nissan.

The trannies get mushy and finicky past 100k miles. SPG handles great when not torque steering.

"the 9-2x is subi crap"
Hey buddy, I'd much rather have the Subi drivetrain in the 9-2x than one by Saab. The reason Saab used the Subie drivetrain is that they knew they couldn't make a better AWD drivetrain than Subaru. <---common sense would indicate this because there would be a GM or SAAB drivetrain in them if they were better than Subie's.
Us Subie owners affectionately refer to them as SAABarus. Haha.

We can always check the records of reliability of each company in the last 20 years and see who has a better track record. One of my best friends loves Saabs and even he will tell you that Subie blows them away in reliability. Subarus do have their quirks but they pale in comparison to Saab's quirks.
God must love stupid people, he made SOOOOO many of them!
