Free online Z encyclopedia

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

Hello all,
I know things similar to this exist, but I have set up
http://www.aboutz.net/
What I'm hoping to do is create an encyclopedia (using the same framework as wikipedia) for anything related to Zs. I know of a nice 350z one, but I hope this will eventually encompass all models, and provide a free and open resource for us to call upon.
The way it works is people are able to freely contribute to the site, and add information. I'm trying to encourage my club to add things as and when they find something of use, and it can be anything so long as there is a link to Zs somewhere. My friend is a big drifting fan and so added details of drivers who have drifted 350zs, later on tonight I intend to add details of what to look for when buying a Z32 along with VIN number and production years for S30s (that's 240/260/280zs to you ) etc.
It's ugly at the moment, and will need some tweaking, but hopefully if we get the ball rolling then maybe it'll be a nice place for us all to reference. My only concern is regional variations between the cars, but wikipedia is so successful that I have some faith it'll work out ok.
Anyway I hope a few of you will find time to take a quick look, there isn't much to see at the moment, but as the content grows hopefully so will the visitors.
Any feedback is welcome,
Thanks,
Russ

Thank you very much CantZMee, you are the first 'external' contributor :)
Your link is dead though (my fault), I suddenly realised we'd need a naming convention, and so I moved it to
http://www.aboutz.net/index.php/350Z_Hidden_Storage_Tray
Anyway as I've been saying on other Z forums, it'll be really good if we can all contribute a little and turn it into a resource worth visiting, otherwise it'll just remain a nice idea and of no use to any of us.
Thanks for the support though, I think it's fairly easy to contribute, I'll be doing my best to add anything we know at zclub.net to it to try and help it grow.

Great idea and a nice resource. Are you planning on having a copy editor? If this is just a hobbyist Z site then maybe no need. But if you do want to be more upscale, then some editing may be required. As an example, from the buying a Z31 article:
"...you should also know that the auto transmissions are junk."
I've had my auto Z31 for many years and the trans has proven to be quite reliablef thus far. Maybe the purist street racer engine revverupper knows that a 5-speed is the only way to live, but I have thoroughly enjoyed the auto. Maybe it's simply because I've changed the fluid/filter and not hot dogged too much? My friends Z31 tranny did go out, but the goof had a trailer hitch and towed his double jetski trailer about.
Maybe better wording would have been:
"...the automatic transmissions are prone to failure if they haven't been cared for, and repairs can be very costly."
I know this sounds like excessive nitpicking, but I thought it may be important to set some kind of tone since the site is still in its infancy. However, it may be impossible to keep pace with the incoming articles. Just some thoughts.
HTH, and thanks for the great new resource.

This is a really good idea. I hope it takes off well.

Thanks Zombie :) I hope it does too.
Zoobee: A copy editor, I'm very much up for 'others' who wish to help. I hope that the site will be self regulated, as you have clearly happened upon something that needs 'editing' :)
Excessive nitpicking will help tune the site into something great, and not just good. Feel free to sign up and correct the page. I believe it was written by one of our clubs drag racers, and so he is clearly biased :) If you don't have time to correct it I will try to do it this weekend.
Anyway thank you to anyone who's taken a look at the site, the ball has definately started rolling (slowly), but thanks to the wealth of Z sites on the net, and Z enthusiasts, hopefully it'll keep going.

Sounds great Russ, so as a Fer sure joined-up member I can go on and edit things? I can troll through there once in a while and polish around. Thanks again for starting up this resouce. Tons of grea info here and on z31.com, but it does feel pretty fragmented. This may just cut down on some of the repetitive posts here.

If you click the sign up button you can edit ANY page on the site (apart from admin areas of course), a brief explanation is on the front page. So yes please DO keep an eye on the site and amend where you see fit.
Sounds like chaos doesn't it? Well all pages have a history of changes, so if you created a page about a particular subject you know about, you can add it to your 'watch list' then you can check in from time to time to see how other people have edited it. Changes can be reverted so if some joker arrives their handywork can be undone. Also there are 'discussion' pages so if you find something you are not sure about, details with the authors can be discussed, and the RIGHT information can then be put forward.
I'm a bit new to it, but wikipedia works so well I'm confident aboutz can :)
Yes, hopefully it'll provide somewhere for ALL the forums to reference. nother reason I wanted to do it is to help eliminate all the bad information that is passed around. Hopefully when a much repeated question is asked we can just say "aboutz.net" :)
Anyway thanks, and I'll do an announce on Z31.com, I missed that one.
I'm also going to find all the info I can on wikipedia.org related to Zs, and ask nicely if the authors would mind me moving their work across, I'm sure it'll be right up their street.
