just spend the 15 on the K&N cleaning kit. it works great

Back in the old days they told you to use gas to clean them. Even at $3 a gallon it's still cheaper than $15 for the kit... Really any good solvent will work fine, put some in a tray that you can dip the filter in till it's clean, let air dry, reoil and go.
