A&Q about 350Z
Q:
I have been working with this car for some time as you all know. I ran into a big challenge at the dyno when I took it to JWT for tuning. Seems the Rochester injectors were a little slow turning off. Anyway long story shot it was going lean at the top end.
I made some changes to the electronics, and installed a fuel damper and started again.
The results were good. So I began tuning myself driving down the street. BTY if you have a dyno to use,USE IT.
The NEW alternator went out, the regulator failed, and it took my 13.9-14.0 voltage to the system to 12.6 volts. The car did not like this at all, and before I realized what was happening and why the car was running so gbad, I did an 18psi run. Not good at all, it went lean. I hate it when that happens, so I freak out about it, thinking I HOPE I did not take another set of pistons. The car seems good, no smoke through the valve cover, and good compression.
I fixed the alternator yesterday. I started tuning again today and I was able to get 300hp, a good clean 300hp @ 8psi of boost with it. I have been working with the VQ map, after I set the fuel table, and making the MAF scaling match the map. I am good to 4.3 volts.
Time to turn up the wick a little more and log it, but from my other changes before the alternator, it should be about good. Lets try 15psi again.
Have to get some more fuel first, so we will see what happens.

The key in this case is to go slow, and since I have not gotten to the dyno yet, lets just say 3rd gear @ 7K is a little faster then I want to go on the street.
I believe I figured out what the failure was with the alternator. This is a new unit, so it has not been messed with.
Seems the rotor rings, for the brushes, were miss aligned and the full width of the brush was not contacting the ring. I looked at the one brush, and the wire, and it looked like the wire got a little hot. So I think that was the problem. I am going to go with an external regulator anyway. Like my electronics friend said, removing electronics away from heat will never be bad, and I agree.

Somewhere in the country LOL. if the guy would stay put long enough I could drive the car out to his place to do the tuing. Nice long strait stretch of roadway out there.
Anyway, hes is doing fine, just traveling, to much if you ask me, but he wasn't asking me LOL.
