Do you remember your first ride in a z?

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

I just wanted to know what everyone thought of their first time riding in a z.I rember back in 91 my friend purchased an 81zxt and when he brought it by,i didn't think much of it.The paint was faded, but the body was pretty much rust free.I didn't know much about the turbo models and was completly amazed how the car put you in your seat.We pulled up to a 91 mustang gt and my friend asked the driver and passenger if they wanted to race, they just laughed at us and said yah right..ok.We blew him away like crazy. When we got up to the next stop sign, the driver had a nervous look on his face and used the excuse i missed 3rd gear.We laughed and said ok.Keep in mind this was done on the back country roads here in Indiana.Sorry for the long post, just curious about everyone elses first time expierences in a z.

Oh yea. 1995. Brand new red TT that my co-workers husband had just bought and she took it to work. 300 miles on the clock. Needless to say, after about 20 minutes of begging, pleading, (and a great possibility of tears) she let me drive it. Me, her, and another girl in the office hit the road for some high - speed runs. Yes, all three of us. You do the math.

It was in '94 and I was in a co-workers mid 80s (can't remember the exact year) white with tan interior 300zx. I remember being impressed with the all digital gauges and g-force meter. That car cornered like a go-kart and really took off when he pushed it. I've wanted one ever since, but ended up buying a 90.

Zazu - that doesn't sound like proper break-in procedures. LOL
My first ride in a Z was coming home from the hospital in 1980 - 4 days old - in a '79 280ZX. My mom reluctantly let my dad bring me home in it.

First Z I ever rode in was the most mis-modified, multi-colored, ripped out interior piece of junk you could imagine. I think it was a '77, but it had an L24 with flat top pistons in it, go figure. Anyways it smelled bad, looked ugly, and was slower than snot, but I still wanted it. Don't know why, it must be in my genes or something.
'73 Turbo, not much stock. Sold now... :-(

The Z cars were one of the most popular sports cars available when I was in high school and college (late 70's early 80's).
The cars were so out of reach for me financially that all I could do was look and lust. My Dad wouldn't help me finance one due to it being a "foreign job". He was a die hard american-made, southern-by-the-grace of God, union to the core man.
Life arrived, and my dream car disappeared until about 1 year ago. My desire to drive an early Z car came to attrition at the ripe old age of 40.
My 78 that I currently own was my first ride. I am also getting to enjoy an 83 ZX with my son that we just purchased last week.
All I can say is, I waited way too long!
You can bet your last dollar that this old Z will be in my driveway for a long time.

Bob Sharps 1974, test drove the piss out of a 260 and bought the identical green one sitting next to it. Bob had a GT2 package where they installed a bunch of goodies (triples, sway bars, shocks, springs and a rollbar). The car was track ready the next week when I got back from a field project and I entered it in a SCCA race at Limerock that weekend.
It and the trailer it was one was stolen a year later. It was found 3 months after that in a body shop on Long Island.

In 1979 remember a neighbor having a Black 280z. Maybe it was a Black Pearl, don't know. It had wire wheels on it and it was always clean, Even during the winter months in Washington D.C.
He took a friend and myself on a 20 minute ride, I was sitting up in the back hatch with my feet stretched out. People were staring at it when we passed them. I was 13 at the time and thought to myself, I have got to get me one of these. It took me a while and after my Chevy days I got one in 2003. Hollerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Two weeks after I saw a History Channel story on Z Cars one (ZXelda) was for sale near the house. Four years ago?
I knew nothing about these cars but what I saw on TV. I was used to Detroit bathtubs. The Honda daily driver was a great car, but it was just transportation.
Used and not expecting much I drove the 280ZXT for the first time with my wife Jeanne.
I suddenly learned what driving is supposed to be, the exceleratrion was something that supprized me ( see Rita - 455 Big Block Buick) but the handling - wow and then WOW.
I asked Jeanne what she thought. She named the car Zelda before we got back to the autoshop selling the car.
I traded a couple of collector guns to get ZXelda. It was well worth it.

My Z story also starts with the history of the Z TV show. Anyway I saw the show when I was 17(this was 1998), and thought to myself "man those 280ZXs are cool cars" I bought a 81ZXT model and built it. Months passed by with me becoming more and more obsessed with Zs, then my uncle bought an 80 280ZX 10th AE. I was intrested in it, so he took me for a ride. We went down a back road, and said "this car will burry the speedometer and no time" he gunned it and soon after the speedo needle was stuck on 85. A few weeks later that very same 280ZX was mine.

I was about 7 or 8 i believe. IT was in my grandfathers 85 300zx. I was small enough to sit in the back(not a 2+2 mind you), my butt was on the compartment with my legs behind the seats . I loved it i remember i thought it was SO FAST! haha i was really little. When i got out and i told my grandfather how much i loved the cars, he said well then when you turn 16 it will be yours. He said nothing after that for 9 years and Sure enough 2 years ago on my birthday when i woke up it was sitting in the driveway freshly washed with a bow on the rear wiper. I stalled out twice just backing it out the driveway cause i was so excited/nervous! i love that car!!!

First ride, about 8 months ago. Picked up a 78’ 5 speed w/air and an almost pristine interior from a insurance salvage auction. Removed crunched fender and headlight scoop, replaced a control arm and strut, aligned front end by eyeball allowing for windage then drove it off the trailer. About 2 months later I picked up an 81’. This one came off the trailer with the aid of a tractor, (needs a fuel pump and the interior is not very impressive). The most recent is a 78’ 2+2 for parts. I had to load this little jewel with a come along in a cold ass rain. It came off with the old reliable log chain and tree method. The 2+2 is getting the most road time in spirit at least because one of the persons from this forum has the seat belts out of it in their Z. Tomorrow I’m off to another auction to take a crack at a 87’. Z cars are like potato chips. My honest opinion of these cars… not particularly fast but fun, what a 28 year old sports car should be.

When I was 15, I came home from school and found it in my driveway. I had no idea how to drive a stick but Dad told me to take it for a spin. My sister and I drove back and forth on our 1/4 mile street for a couple hours.
I ground a few gears, but got the hang of it after a while. Never been more elated :-)

I was 16 in back in 69. I saw them every where but never knew someone who owned one. Talked to people with them and looked at their cars over the years but never drove one. I went back to school at 32 and one of my friends sister let him drive her new 300ZXT 2 + 2 to school one day. We went to lunch and he drove slower then my grandmother did in her 1966 Skylark GS with a 445 wildcat motor in it. This was the first car I drove around after I got my DL and I took care of cooking the tires for her. I did such a good job that grandparants thought something was wrong with the diff because it used three sets of back tires in three months and the front ones still look brand new. So they sold it and got a POS, I still miss that car today.
Back in 99 our VP was moving to Dallas who had three cars in his garage plus his new SUV. One was an old hot rod that was on the cover of Hot Rod Mag back in the 80, one was his 66 427 4-speed Corvette and the other one was what is now my Blue Z. Many of the department heads had thought about buying it but all backed out. To much power for their kids to have kind of deal. I stop him in the hall one day and asked about it and the next thing I knew Sat I was driving it home. Then as the years went by I got the 76 for a weekend car.

In 1997, after I had junked the $800 Corrolla that a kid at my school rear ended, my father decided to help me out (kind of hard to pay rent, go to school and work a full time job without a car). We went car shopping and came across this somewhat rusty 81 ZX, T-Tops, Automatic (even then I didn't like autos) with no radio for $1000. The evening I drove it off the lot, picked up my now ex-wife to go to the beach and hit a deer on the back roads. Thankfully, due to the beautiful handling, the animal merely grazed the front quarter panel, dented it and broke the marker light lens. The 4 tire marks, quick handling and stopping power had my heart racing. A quick inspection of the damage and we were back on the road hitting curves and watching the speedo peg out. I loved and longed for the Z cars ever since.

My first ride was back in '73. I was 8 years old and we were visiting friends.
The father had a 240 Z (I think it was a '71) and when I sat in the passenger seat, I thought it was the most exotic car I had ever been in because of the low interior door handles. I was so fascinated that he took me for a drive. I can still remember thinking how cool it was that the nose of the car shot up whenever he would punch it.
When they came out with the ZX in '79 I remember being disappointed that they had moved the door handle up on the door. In my opinion, Datsun had eliminated one of the things that gave the Z it's character and was turning it into just an ordinary car.

In the fall of '04 I was working in Florida with my brother-in-law. Down the street from the house we were renting was a used car lot with a marron z32 coupe. Test drove it and was in love. Less than 2 weeks later it was gone before I had the money. This past spring break (college) my parents and I looked at a '79 280zx that was for sale. That night it was mine not as fast and sporty as the z32 but worth the money.

I drove a maroon 1986 300ZX when I was 16 and rode in a silver 1978 2+2 (just like the one in Bruce Almighty, but nicer) many times growing up...it was my best friends mom's car, and the very reason I fell in love with Z's. I used to love the bucket seats that I could barely fit in, the smell of the car, the crazy seat belts that retracted into the plastic roller, and the fact that she would let me shift the gears while she pushed in the clutch.
