To those of you who make money on Ebay selling car parts or similar

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

You might want to ask a few extra bucks on shipping from now on other than the prices, or the approximate prices you're used to. They've gone up substantially, I'm assuming due to the gas. I shipped 6 pistons today, the box wasn't much bigger than maybe a couple DVDs end to end as far as length, maybe 1.5 times the size of the width of one. So a fairly small box, weighed maybe 7 pounds. Cost me around $15 and some change to ship it. A month ago that would have cost me about $8 or so. Anyways, just wanted to let you guys know in case you weren't thinking ahead. Don't want to lose money on a deal.

What are you using UPS, USPS, FedEx, or other?

A:

I always use the Post Office. I used to use UPS, then discovered that about 90% of the time, Fed Ex (just across the street) was way cheaper. Then I figured I'd use the USPS to ship everything, even bigger items like guitars and things. Maybe USPS went up, or maybe it's just them recouping all the gas fees.

i just bought a wilwood brake system which includes calipers front and rear, front hubs, rotors front and rear, pads and brackets. the shipment for ups was 35 bucks.

I have bought too much on e-Bay. The prices and bids can seem so reasonable - but check the shipping cost.
Many of these dealers are getting their profit from overcharging on shipping & handling.

I charge actual shipping plus $1-2 handling for most items I sell. My store items are flat rate USPS Priority mail because they are under 1 lb. I tack on an extra $.45 for the effort to walk to the mailbox though. I've seen a lot of stuff where the shipping was more than the buy it now price. A lot of so-called discount sellers are making the profits in shipping. A lot of people don't look at that when they bid. Once you bid, it's a contract. If you were concerned about shipping costs, you should have asked BEFORE you bid. I've been burned a time or two, now I ALWAYS ask if it's not stated in the auction.

Usually I charge a flat-rate and if shipping happens to be more than what I advertised (this only happened once) then I pay for it out of my pocket. Gotta keep my 100% feedback!

Shipping has gone up and it will go up again i'm sure. There was a flyer at the post office not too long ago telling of the postage increases.

The handling fee is where the money is at on internet businesses it might seem piddly to some but if you're selling on a large scale think about what $5 an item you sell will do. Take Summit and Jegs for instance theyve got "free" shipping but a $10 handling charge on everything. Now they make a little money on the product lose a tad on the shipping then make $10 on the handling fee so say they made 10,000 sales in a day (which is probably a way low balled number) thats $100,000 in a day off nothing but the handling charge.

When I list items on Ebay, I use the UPS rates to charge to the buyer (I tell them), and then I usually ship USPS to save a few bux.
