THIS CAR IS STILL RUNNING HOT!

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

Ok here is the deal! noticed my car was running a little warm a while back. The first thing i replaced was the radiator cap. Did some testing yesterday and now i know i have a problem cause its running past half way.mind you this car has a modified 4 row radiator and the temp gauge never even went to the half way marker before unless it was like 100 degress out side. So i replaced the therostat which was a 192 which was stuck open and put a 160 in. Still the car is getting hot so i take the radiatorshop to get rodded and the guy at the radiator shop tells me it was partialy pluggeed but not much. Soo i get it back together and guess what its still getting hot. There are no leaks and my car is not bubbling over or anything like that. it actually feels ok What are the odds that im getting a bad reading? Or does anyone think i may have head gasket issues? I thought hks gaskets dont blow? lol lol! the water pump is about 3 years old and is nice and quiet so i think its ok!

You need to put a BETTER guage then see whats happining. Those stock guages work off of resistance, and if its corroded, or loose connection, it WILL show a mis-reading.

Get a thermometer so you can see how hot it actually is. The stock gauge is only good for a relative reading.

Just go buy an autometer guage. Either that or try and cheat and run straight water with Royal Purple Purple Ice in it. That should cool it down by about 20* or so.

ok i let the car cool down and checked the water level and i had to add about 3 quarts of water. i drove it around and now the gauge is reading a little less than the midway point of the gauge. So that either means they did not put enough water in it at the radiator shop after it was put back in or i indeed have head gasket problems. Im gonna let it cool down again and check the water level. that should give me some insight. still no leaks or signs of water in the oil!

ok double checked the water level and it was a ok now and the water/cooant semms to be flowing well in the radiator seems to be flowing well. i guess im gonna have to drive this car the next cople of days and monitor everything!

Any leaks in the EGR system or close to the head in the exhaust system ?.

I run past the 1/2 way point... I hope this isn't an issue, or is it?

Not necessarily a problem, but of all my Z's the temp gauges always read just before or right at the halfway point.

Yea, halfway or just before halfway is norm for a 70-78 Z, I say get a meat therm and do a real test!
