A&Q about 350Z
Q:
Hey Zer's,
I bought a crossfire and will be getting out of the Z car world (for now). I must say the ride in the SRT is very Zish with a high performance brake and suspension system.
ALL my goddies including both 240Z will be sold. I look forward to air conditioning this summer! and taking my Crossfire out to the track.
Please do not ask me on this forum for more details, I will not answer.
See you @ the track

today at lunch and thought how much it reminded me of the Z body outline. I have mentioned to others that they look like a Z and I always get disagreement. Ahhh ya know, opinions are like a55holes, everybody's got one!
Anyway, enjoy the ride and wish you could have kept the Z for at least a weekender.
What did you do with the Z, BTW?

Ya,
I hear you; I will miss smelling like exhaust when I get out of my car.
I'm going from a horsepower to weight ration of 1:6.7Lbs to 1: 10Lbs. A trade off I can live with. I have not looked into changing the supercharger gearing but I'm sure I can.

P.S. I have a very cool wife, she told me if this was my mid-life crisis a new car would cost me less than a new wife!. Very cool.

A buddy has a non-SRT Crossfire. I don't really care for the looks, but the car is actually pretty nice. He tracks it quite a bit and it does well. It is actually very Zish for a modern car. Overall, it feels more like a 1st gen Z than the 350Z does.

I know of one area where the Crossfire is likely a total downgrade: steering. While the brand new SLK has rack-and-pinion steering (finally!), the Crossfire is built on the just-retired SLK hand-me-down chassis and must make do with the recirculating ball steering box Mercedes has spent the last 80 years refusing to abandon.
Z cars came out with rack-and-pinion 36 years ago and the Crossfire still has it!
Blah. Talk about "numb" steering. My father-in-law has one of the SLKs that the Crossfire is basically a rebody of, and the steering SUCKS compared to my first-generation Z.
Otherwise, they look cool and you can't argue with the HP, so enjoy the AC, reliability, and modern sportiness.
Cheers,
Alex

Datto,
It's in the works, the original owner wants it back. He made me a great deal when I bought it from him so he will get one back and he knows the car.
I believe over the past 24 years I have "done" the Z thingy.well.. It sadened me to test ride the 350Z turbo, and like the SRT better.
That will upset someone as it upset me. I so wanted the 350Z to be better. The G35 was a good ride.
as you stated

The SRT Crossfire is an awesome car. Its a modern, fast and reliable machine with all of todays technology. But it sure feels nice to drive a classic Z now and then. I get my Z out of the garage and drive it once or twice a month just to refresh my memory.

From day one I have thought the crossfire looks more like a Z than the 350. It looks like a nice car I'm interested to hear how it handles. I would also expect it to be decently faster on the top end than even a modified 1st gen.
330 hp is crank right? So it should get around 260-270 to the ground, not bad at all.
Matt

Dam,
It's fast! I'm trying to keep my foot out of it, during break-in but occasionally I'm forced to hit the gas by some Honda or Mustang.
Road and track has the 0-60 time @ 4.8 seconds! Not to bad for a STOCK pig as someone called it. Road and track time for the 1/4 mile is 13.3@107.5 MPH again good for a STOCK car.
For comparison ::::::: 0-60:::::::::1/4
Crossfire SRT------- 4.8///// 13.3@107.5
Ford mustang GT----- 5.3///// 13.9@101
Acura NSX------------ 5.0///// 13.4@105.9
Audi TT roadster----- 6.3///// 14.7@96.3
Infiniti G35--------- 5.9///// 14.4@100.6
Lexus IS350--------- 6.0///// 14.5@98.6
Mazda RX8----------- 6.1///// 14.6@95.6
350Z---------------- 5.6///// 14.1@101.8
GTO---------------- 5.0///// 13.5@107.1
Boxster S---------- 5.0///// 13.4@105
Bmw M3 comp -------- 4.8/////13.4@105.6
Corvette ---------- 4.8/////13.2@107.9
Cooper S ---------- 7.7/////15.9@89.3
Eclipse GT--------- 5.8/////14.4@101.
Impreza WRX STi----- 4.9/////13.3@103
The SRT higher rate springs and performance suspension is awesome and the brakes are amazing, better than the Wilwood combo I had on my 240.
At the gas pump today I noticed something realy neat 21MPG in town! hell my 240 was getting 10!, All this with a 7 year 70,000 warranty.
Please do not get me wrong in my opion the early Z car is one of the best cars ever made.

Sounds good Pete. 13.3's is LS1 camaro territory, and the crossfire doesn't look like a catfish like the camaro's!

So did they switch the SRT Crossfire to rack-n-pinion steering, or is it a recirc-ball steering like the pedestrian Crossfire? Just curious. It's the one shortcoming of my father-in-law's SLK.
You certainly can't argue with Corvette performance on a very unique body.
Cheers,
Alex

A:
Alex,
I don't know I will look into it. I think it is the recirc-ball steering? Road and Tracks slalom test of the car was at at speed of 67.6MPH compairing nicely to most very nice sports cars.
If the SLK is also the AMG then it would have the same brakes, suspension and supercharged engine.
I have not played with the traction contol button yet, but I will soon.

Alez,
I'm still not sure but here is the write up.
SRT-6 Powertrain
The heart of every SRT vehicle is its engine. The Crossfire SRT-6 is no exception.
A hand-built 3.2-litre supercharged V-6 engine boasting 330 hp (246 kW) and 420 Nm (310 lb.-ft.) of torque powers the ultimate Chrysler Crossfire, taking the SRT-6 from 0 to 100 km/h in just over five seconds.
Featuring a helical supercharger and a water-to-air intercooler, the 18-valve V-6 engine delivers 90 per cent of peak torque across a broad range of the power band – from 2300 to 6200 rpm.
In addition to the 330 hp engine, the Chrysler Crossfire SRT-6 features an upgraded five-speed automatic transmission (with AutoStick®) to handle the extra power – and specifically the low-end torque – as well as a deeper, performance-tuned exhaust note.
SRT-6 Ride and Handling
To wear the SRT badge, benchmark performance must be present in every aspect of the vehicle.
Tested on the Autobahn, on high-speed ovals, race tracks, and the world’s finest and most demanding roads, the Crossfire SRT-6 provides what performance enthusiasts demand, thanks in large part to its unique ride and handling characteristics.
To delight enthusiasts and deliver ultimate Chrysler performance, SRT engineers sought to deliver a stiffer, sportier performance ride with reduced understeer versus the base Crossfire.
They began by significantly increasing the spring rates, and SRT-6 Coupe and Roadster models are tuned differently, to their own unique characteristics. The Coupe’s spring rates are 451 lb./in. in the front and 480 lb./in. in the rear, while the Roadster’s are 434 lb./in. in the front and 451 lb./in. in the rear, compared to 303 lb./in. front and 337 lb./in. rear on the base Crossfire Coupe and Roadster models.
The suspension is completed with performance-tuned damping and an aggressive compound on Crossfire’s Michelin Pilot Sport ultra-high performance 225/40 ZR18 (front) and 255/35 ZR19 (rear) tyres. An Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) tuned specifically for more spirited driving throughout the car’s dynamic range further contributes to the Crossfire SRT-6’s ultimate two-seater performance ride and handling.
SRT-6 Braking
The SRT signature performance test is 0-100-0 mph, reinforcing that performance is more than acceleration. That’s why SRT vehicles will always be among the world’s best in braking capabilities.
To give the Chrysler Crossfire SRT-6 remarkably short braking distances and fade-free performance, SRT engineers utilised internally ventilated disc brakes at all four corners (330 x 32 mm front; 300 x 22 mm rear), with dual-piston calipers front (44/44 mm) and rear (42/42 mm). These allow the SRT-6 to go from 60 to 0 mph (96-0 km/h) in approximately 115 feet (35 metres).
A:
I'm guessing they'd have mentioned it if they'd upgraded it over the base recirc-ball Crossfire. No biggie, but I really appreciate the precision of the Z steering and I know that's why Daimler/Chrysler engineers finally corrected that in the new SLK (out last year?).
Cheers mr. stealth vette stalker.
