OH BTW this was taken 3 years ago if memory serves me right. It looks much worse now. The front windshield is busted out and the hood is dented in too.
Simplified plan is to strip the car, take it to my friends body shop, paint it, assembly with parts from the donor car, and drive it to it's new home.
NOTE: I don't now how fast it will download that movie. I do know that my bandwidth is restricted!

Anyone know Alabama emission laws? What can be done with the exhaust? I have a brand new complete exhaust with Catco converter if needed, but I'm hoping to eliminate using the brand new converter.

Speaking as someone who registered four cars there "during the dark years" and has seen what is on the road there, just stick a pipe and premuffler.
Remember they are Federal Compliance there, and Federal ZX's didn't have a Catalyst till 81....
BTW, looks like I will be up there Monday if all goes right, so I'm going to save my weekend returning the tires, and just give em to ya Monday, O.K.?

The car was vandelized 4 times in the past 3 years and the owners live in Alabama so they really couldn't do much about it. On top of that the owners are a family of I think 8... So not much money when it happened. They are ready to get it going now though.

seems a very solid car man nature made it dirty given that ... but i dont see a spec of rust .. to bad some a holes have crused all windows and lights ...

Man, you must be blind!
How can anyone look at that engine bay and say "i dont see a spec of rust" ? That level of corrosion on the engine will mirror the corrosion on the rest of the car. The springs, frame rails, gas tank, etc, etc...
Damn, I can't even imagine the electrical problems that lurk after the infestation and a GL with power windows will need more attention.
Seriously, I'd tell them to just get one in great shape for $1,200 and be done. By the time you replace all the parts it will be a differnt car anyway...

That is what the donor car is for... The exterior of the car is in pretty good shape. Few dents. I will be replacing most of the replacables for sure. Engine is going into the garbage. Tranny: garbage, interior: garbage, wiring: garbage, gas tank: garbage... you get the idea. Pretty much the car will be replaced.
It's going to be interesting to say the least...

Hybrid you have no idea what rust means .... that is not rust .. wheelwels seem intact strut towers and cowlvents dont show rust .. roofline above the window doesnt .....

I guess I should say that I have contacted my buddies body shop about getting an estimate. And also I have warned that the intial amount will not cover any undiscovered rust that most certainly lurks under the car.
We may use mild steel sheets if no prefabed floors can be found. I'm hoping they will make up their minds about full paint while the car is stripped. Take care of existing rust and prevention, and then paint the whole thing.

I just got dicked off by friend at the body shop...
He didn't even see the car. He said I shouldn't bother with a "Z"... ANY Z! He said he I should do cars that are worth money like mustangs... That was a shock coming from someone who has owned many Z cars... He must be having a bad day...
He refered me to Miracle... I mean he is high end stuff for sure. He is in business to restore classics for the most part. I've done a few cars through him in the past. I guess I don't bring enough $$$. Oh well looks like I will be doing most of the body work and prep...

Don't you see that vapor trap (ooops, I mean blue tarp)? Don't you see the rust on the nose, wheel wells, fender line, hatch and tail? You have any frikken idea what uric acid does to raw metal?
Dream on, Frank. If the small parts (and large engine parts) show that much corrosion, the rest of the fittings and seams will not be immune. If rust ravaged the engine under a closed hood, then 3 guesses as to what the floorbords and hatch look like after being exposed directly with the elements through the broken hatch...

This has to have sentimental value to have rebuilt because it is a lost cause as it sits now. You will be swapping over everything from the donor car, and as you can see. Everything.

I think it's a meerkat nest, or maybe a camel. Never heard of a squirrel making a nest. Make sure it's still there when you're done with the restore. Some tree hugging environmentalist will have your hide if you disturb it! Heck, might be the only thing good on the car!

With the amount of cash I should be able to get it done fast. Everything is paid for up front cept the paint. It should be done in just over a month depending on paint and parts. I'll have pics from start to finish when it is delivered in Tanner. That is the initial plan. The time may get pushed out and I'm actually counting on it. You never really know until you get everythign apart to see how bad it really is.

There's a certain sense of pride in bringing a car back from almost certain death, like the car above. Some people called me crazy for buying my 86' how it looked, but the price was right and I already had a Z that was in mint condition externally so I thought why the hell not? Once I fixed everything mechanically with my 88 I realized something, I was bored! lol Sure it's fun to drive it, but it's also fun having something to work on and bring back to life. When I'm done with my 86 performance wise (long time) and cosmetic wise I'll probably look for yet another Z that desperately needs some attention just for something to do...
As for the rust issue, unless it's been garaged forever and never seen a drop of rain it's totally unreasonable to expect a 20-30 year old car to be "rust free"...

Just make sure to keep those photos, it will be awesome looking back on them when you have it all done and looking sexy again. That's how I'm doing my project, as a true evolution of stages. I'm doing performance first so it's going to be untidy until I'm running 12 second 1/4 miles effortlessly, then I'll start on the cosmetic side of things including a full strip down and respray. And THEN back to performance again and shooting for 10's :)

Once you move the parts cars bits to this car, you now have to start ALL OVER AGAIN to get new carpet, new seats, new brake lines all the way to the master, etc because you're using old 27 year old used parts at this car. You'll get it running, THEN you have to rebuild it again properly with new or rebuilt parts.
All that is getting done is suffling of old, very old, parts.

I was talking about the my server situation not the ZX... I could take apart the ZX blind folded with one foot behind my back and in 3 hours...
I did tell the owners that I will have to replace almost all of that stuff with NEW parts. I have a good portion of like new interior peices including the seats, headliner, dash, center console...etc. So I am good to go there.

As I said the car was vandalized many times before. I pulled the tarp off the top of the car that keeps most of the stuff like water, bugs, rain out of the broken windows and the roof is smashed to the point of garbage. I'm thinking of making it a t-top car as I have the donor roof already. That would be neato!
I took a very close look around the car once more and being somewhat of a S30 and S130 rust expert I can safely say that I will only have 2 rust issues to deal with when everything is broken down. The floor pans and the passenger side rear rocker panel needs replaced.
I think it is time to invest in a dipping tank... One of those tanks that will dunk the entire car in the paint vat so it permeates every orifice!! AWH that would be cool.

I live in WI, but I bought my 240z from a guy who owned it in sacramento. I saw this 280z and immediately noticed it looks like it has the same pin-stripping configuration as my '73. (i think it has two small reds and a heavy black). It even comes to a point the same way on the hood. I had never seen another like it, but maybe it can from the same dealer? Is this a common thing, or do I not get out much.
