Five-speed is all you need. Six is too many. Seven is stupid.

I want a 12 speed, so you're constantly shifting forever every 500rpms! That would be so much fun to drive... lol NOT!

I would like a 6 speed double overdrive....with a 1:1 4th gear, a .76:1 5th, and somewheres in the range of a .65:1 top gear.
If all were equal, none would be strong.

That's nothing. Want some real 7 speed +++ gearbox action? The new Lexus LS460 and LS600h automoatics have more gears than that. No if's or maybe's, they'll be out as 07 models.

That would be stupid on a 130hp 280z that runs at 125mph.
That would be nice on a 450hp Porsche that runs at 220 mph.

A:

It makes more sense on a underpowered car that doesn't have the tourqe range of a large engine.

A:

No, it makes more sence on a high powered car that can go 220+ mph that needs more gears to keep the engine in the maximum power band throuout a large mph range.
It does not make sense on an adequately powered draggy Z car, where they did not even see the need for a 5 speed until the end of the 1st gens.

agreed.
even the bigtrucks are set up the same way.
I had a Volvo truck, 350 hp/1300 ft lbs,9 speed tranny 4:11 gears72mph max,ave 5 mpg, was slow as hell
I had a Kenworth T 600,430 HP/1550 ft lbs,10 speed overdrive,3:70s, 90mph,
I had a Kenworth W900L, 600 HP/2500 ft lbs,18speed double overdrive,3:33s,120+mph. the truck ran the same whether loaded or empty...incredibly strong.
you dont put more transmission than what the engine needs.
If all were equal, none would be strong.

I prefer an automatic trans because it allows me to talk on my cell phone while I'm driving and cause lots of accidents. Just kidding.
With seven speeds, it means you're really going to be rowing through the gears and give your arm a work out.

A:

7 speeds would not be that bad if you have a powerful engine. If you want to run 230+mph you just about need a 7th gear.
The bugatti veyron 16.4 has a 7 speed. According to their diagram it could go almost 250 mph. 1000hp is alot and to be able to use it needs one **** of a tranny.
I'd just like to know how Z1's 1200 rwhp convertable can even be driven. (assuming it has a tt transmission)

A:

First, don't get fooled by comparing a cheap DD with a millon dollar Bugatti. For BEST acceleration you need to keep the engine at max power rpms. That's why high end sports cars have so many gears, it's easier to keep it there. It wasnt so much a priorty on a cheap sports car as money was. eg. 240z

A:

the only time i use 6th in my Z06 is cruising long distances on the freeway. It allows an easy 30 mpg at 75 mph.
