General question about distributor caps....

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

Alright, I have an 86 Ford Ranger 2.9 V6 Auto. I started to give it a tune up a while ago, but then the damn thing became stillborn. It wouldnt start anymore. I have put everything back the way it was, except for the dist cap and rotor. when I took those off I noticed the new one is a bit different from the old one. The points are all the same, but the little, um, contact on the underside of the cap (on the underside) is cylindrical and can be pushed in, while the one in the original cap was round in shape. I'm referring to the port where the ignition coil attaches to the cap (the undeside of it, anyways). I compared the part # with the website, and it says it is the right part for my truck, but it seems like those things would make a difference.
would they really make that big a difference? Oh, and if you have any suggestions for the truck, it would be most appreciated as well:)

its sprinngy cause thats where the center of the rotor makes contact with the cap-
as long as its making contact, it should be fine!

I have an 89 Ranger with the 2.9l and I just recently did the cap and rotor, wires, plugs, etc... No problems at all even with the slightly different cap. I remembered thinking the same thing about the coil post being a bit different, but it worked none the less.

go back to the parts store and have them pull another one off the shelf and compare. It could be the wrong part in the wrong box, simply a packaging error. It's happened to me.

sometimes aftermarket brands arent compatable with one another. Your cap and rotor made by the same company?

Well, the one that I replaced looked like it was aftermarket as well. It definitely wasnt a Ford part. The posts on the insied were scored, so I thought I'd replace it...
Not sure about the cap and rotor being from the same company...will look this afternoon.
