What you did will land you in Jail if the owner witnessed it---prove your intent wasn't to steal it, in the eyes of the law you were in the act of stealing it, and had the owner found you, and held you at gunpoint till the cops got there, you would be in hot (very hot) water.
And I would bet they would prosecute if the owner pressed it.
Think of your explanation and how it would be viewed by ANYONE on a jury:
I opened the doors because they were unlocked, and I just decided to see if my key would start it...
Like the cop would say: "Suuuure you weren't going to steal it!"
I would suggest you don't do that anny longer.
In Texas, the owner could shoot you for what you did.
You are playing with more than fire, there. EXTREMELY bad judgement!

What the hell kind of people do we have here on the website today that are so morally corrupt and show such disdain for other people's posessions that they would even THINK "most" people would do this.
This HAS to be a manifestation of California's Gun Laws. If people realized screwing with someone else's car could get their a$$ shot dead, they MIGHT show a little more respect for other people's property, and keep their dirty little mitts off stuff that doesn't belong to them!
I can't believe someone would even THINK that way.
That is parasitically low!

The last person who messed with my cars almost got shot, here in Ca. and you can look it up on this forum. We caught this guy slashing the tires on my brand new 2 day old Sentra and my 83 280zxt. We chased his ass down the street with riffles while my best friends wife called the cops. We held his ass at gun point trying to decide whether or not to kick his ass!
I would say be careful when checking out someones car. I always contact the owner somehow and get instructions from them first. Cover your A$$. For all the owner would have known is someone is FN with his Z...

If anything, this just reinforces the need to keep my Z locked in the garage when home, and parking it in sight while elsewhere! TonyD: I know your usually a very detail-oriented poster so I should tell you that there would be no Jury on a theft case, just a Judge. Well said, BTW.
24ounce, you've got guts. This time curiosity only let you go so far, but what about next time? They say even bigtime criminals start small (I'm NOT accusing you of being a criminal, just food for thought). It takes more and more each time to feel that "rush" when your doing something you're not supposed to be doing. I hope you don't experiment any further and don't draw a new line in the sand!
Food For Thought #2: I'm assuming that to have that driving job, they may have done a background check on you, so keep in mind what kind of trouble you can potentially get into with your job, and not just the inconvenience of being held up by the police for an afternoon if you got caught!

Not if firearms are involved and the guy gets whacked!
LOL
But that's a bit down the road. You're correct, it would be the judge saying "suuuuure you weren't stealing it" as he sentenced you to probation at LEAST!
But if it WAS a jury, (empathay here) can you believe as a juror, sitting in a box, you heard a guy say that, and actually BELIEVE him?
I know I wouldn't.
Then again, when I am king, there would be no jury for that, nor judge. Owners would be allowed to summarily execute interlopers in automotive fiddling cases.
The government would only be there to record the statistics, and notify the next of kin to clean up the body within 72 hours or face a "summary abatement" charge for the local municipality or county clean up of the mess...

i'm sorry, but hearing all these rants, I have to put my 2 cents in---without trying to incite or start flames. this whole thing on carrying guns and forking out your own "personal justice" with guns sounds like a good idea at first, but where do you draw the line? so if someone steps on your "turf" (private property) you kill them? if someone breaks into your car, you "excecute" them? Sounds very primitive and crude if you ask me. How is a life worth that of a vehicle? to end someone's life over something so trivial, it just takes pettiness to a new, lower level. yeah sure, people would think twice about committing these "small" crimes, but this policy of gun toting hillbillies metting out justice as they see fit will only cause more guns being circulated and more deaths because people in general will start to find "excuses" to shoot someone even though its not necessary. try proving excessive force was always necessary, thats more time consuming. Gun control is there for a reason. It helps weed out potential criminals or unstable people from getting their hands on those weapons. so I'm glad there's laws against guns, or else people would get shot for opening a z car to just to "look" at it.

You are a gleaming example of what's right in this world.
For those of you that think I'm being sarcastic, I have absolutely no tolerance for people that leach off the lives of others. Those that can't accept the reason they are where they are is because of the decisions THEY HAVE made in life. The whiners, the people who feel entitled to what other people have achieved without having worked their azz off to get it themselves.
Someone messes with my property and they're gonna get the ugly end of either a Kimber .45, a Sig P229 .40S&W or if they're really in the wrong place at the wrong time a Bushmaster XM15A3 or a Remington 870 Marine Magnum.

Now, why do you assume they would get shot? Jumping to that conclusion is purely because you have no actual understanding that the most frequent use of a firearm results in a non-lethal conclusion.
I've been involved in two altercations that involved a firearm.
The second, was when I was staying at a friends house when a pair of thugs was attempting to rob it and I was the one with the gun and held them until the police arrived.
The first was when I was unarmed and the guy trying to mug me found himself on the ground with his gun pointed at him hoping to god the police would get there soon. Although he shot me in the leg, no one died. I still carry that bullet in my leg to remind me that bad people with guns can only be stopped by good people with guns. Good people without guns are called victims or collateral damage. I choose to be neither.
P.S.
Until you've been in a life threatening situation involving firearms, keep your 2 cents to yourself.

I don't need to be in life threatening situations like you to excersise common sense and moral values. true, maybe your situation is one in a million, and good thing you survived and are okay, but you can also have cops who haven't fired a gun at anyone for over 25 years in the service, and they put their lives on the line every day. my point is simple: I think it is okay to have a gun, but I don't think we should do away with gun control. laws are there for a reason. do you know the percentage of those who have gun permits that use their guns every year? from what I read, less than 5 percent....what a difference your "guns" are making.
"Toting that GD liberal line I see."
hmm, toting that close minded republican line....
I just think its irrelevant to suggest to 24ounce that he could get shot doing those things, instead we should tell him the real reason why you shouldn't do those things: because it isn't his property, it belongs to someone else. We shouldn't sit there and go "you should have got blasted" nonsense.

Depending on the jurisdiction, it is legal to use lethal force in order to protect private property. People doing something similar, although, with malicious intent have been.
As a result, I don't think it's at all irrelevant to warn Datto that he could have been shot.
I'm not going to imply that he was going to get shot, but it certainly was a possibility. Using an extreme case to illustrate the risk associated with a dangerous choice is often a very effective method of helping someone re-evaluate their decision making process.
Considering we had virtually NO gun control until 1968, it makes you wonder how we survived up until then. Or, maybe the decline in our society can be correlated to the increase in gun controls with the nexus point at 1968...
So, shall we start talking about cars again?
Given that so many of these locks are worn to near uselessness, I strongly recommend everyone replace all their locks with new ones. And don't forget to have your glove box keyed to the new locks. That's probably the only tumbler that isn't worn out!

Gun control laws are there for a reason? What reason is that? To remove guns from the hands of law-abiding citizens so only the criminals (by definition unlikely to obey gun control laws) have them?
You've never been in a bad situation. Great. Good for you. Some of us have and understand that you don't have to kill to use a gun to protect yourself, family, and YES -- property. Threaten, maim, there's lots of ways to make your point to a violence-intending criminal.
Bottom line: Washington DC has the toughest gun control laws in the U.S. and has one of the highest gun-crime rates and violent crime rates. Right across the Potomac River in Red-State Virginia, where we're allowed to carry concealed weapons (with a permit following appropriate training or evidence of such -- such as military service, thank you very much), the gun and violent crime rates are among the lowest in the country.
Coincidence? You tell me, liberal genius.
