Better off buying a different Z

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

I intend on spending around 5k (some of which is already saved) - Would I be better off saving and buying a different nice Z (I'd prefer a "series 1" 240z; I doubt I could afford that) - it's harder for me to restore the very solid shell because I don't have a garage.. and now it's rainy season.. so it rains; almost everyday for at least 2 - 3 hours... southwest florida sucks.
another thing is, being that I won't be feeling right for a few more months due to the lung surgery... my parents & doctor are probably right, I'm not in the best condition to be doing all this work -- but I'd like to move out of my parents house by september..
every time I vaccuum it out... it rains, and more water finds it's way in the car through the door and the seal isn't there.
I just don't know which would be better?
So many choices.. crap.. this wouldn't be a problem if I had a garage... this sucks

youth is wasted on the young

A:

$250 flight to CA.
$2,500 for a good 240Z
$250 for gas to drive home
Priceless for the adventure
--------
That's just 3K to get a good car.

A:

Like everyone said. Get a good cover. I lived in the Florida Keys for 4 years and didn't have a garage. My car needed constant attention because I only had a carport. I strongly agree with Zoobee that you should get some kind of storage or covering if you do intend to do any kind of bodywork. That humid salty air WILL get it's claws into your body panels wreak havoc. Good luck with your car hunting, hope you find what you're looking for, and get better!

I had one of those tarp things... cemented into the ground.. the bad part about the island is we get insane gusts during storms.. and during a light storm it was ripped apart..

Hybrid77z's suggestion is good... but that's a hell of a drive..
How comfortable is it sleeping in a Z?

I had to sleep in my '79 zx that I used to have. Not bad. Driving cross-country you're looking at 3-5 days. Depends on how many miles you put in. I like Hybrid's idea. I've done the drive several times.

You only sleep in a Z as a last resort. Add a few hundred & stay in a hotel or take camping gear. Take your GF or find one on the road. What is youth for if not adventure? You didn't say what's up with your current car. Don't pay attention to the doctor. Do as much as you can so long as it doesn't set you back or make you sick. In fact, say as far away from the doc as possible. Most people that go to doctors are sick so it's obviously better to stay away.
Anyone can drive a new car.

A:

I hate to say No to your plans, but I think you have to get the word from the medicos about what you can do. If your health and finances are not up to doing a resto to the Z, maybe you need to find a running car in better shape to use until your health and finances improve.
Whatever you decide, best of luck.
Rusty but running.

what an excellent thread! hitting the open road, ripping cross country in a Z! you never know how beautiful this country is until you drive across it. unfortunately, living in SW Florida means that you will have to drive all the way across Interstate 10.
a suggestion: if you do plan to run this,
-get a road atlas and read it carefully! there are sections of 10 where there arent gas stations for hundreds of miles
-carry a spare gas can, spare belts, coolant, beefy jerky and drinking water...etc
-plan your drives carefully. between Tucson,Az and the Texas line, theres not alot out there.the daytime heat is unbelievable and the nightime it gets cool! for me, it hit 120+ when I was out there but dropped to 60 degrees (thats freaking cold after being in such incredible heat
-get the cell numbers of as many Z'ers as you can. call them up as you are passing through their area. the ones that can come out to meet you you will find are some of the coolest people on the planet
-get a CB. some of those truckers are superhumans driving incredibly powerful machines at mindboggling speeds at night...especially through the desolate parts of the country. the CB will allow you to keep up with them, communicate, and provide entertainment. you will cover alot of ground. alot of them will be cattlehaulers and they will run at night to prevent the cattle from getting sick.

Hybrid has a very good idea - but it doesn't have to be Cali. what you want maybe closer.
Try Autotrader.com, Hemmings.com and all the other Z sites. Someone has what you want at a good price.
If you don't want to make a long trip, consider having the car shipped to you. A local Z club member could help you check the car out at that end.
The journey is the adventure even if it is just on the Web.
Good luck, good hunting and follow the Doctr's advice. Take small steps and build your strength. You have a quest to find that Z so you have something to work toward.

Best medicine out there, blasting overland in a z.

Ballistic: I followed the same semi-truck from Memphis to Texarkana on my Z road trip a few years ago. I didn't have a CB... but I stayed right behind him because it helped me regulate my speed. He was going 80 - 85mph most of the way but when he slowed down it was always because of a cop or a speed trap. I made really good time and avoided many tickets by following him! I wasn't trying to follow the same truck but it just turned out we were going the same way for a while.

Dry weather is good for lung problems, too. For the same reasons that it produces so many rust-free, (or in the case of the Z, mostly rust free..) vehicles.
Get your Z running as soon as you can (don't rush it, a relapse would keep you back for longer then waiting) and then save up money for a move. West, away from the oceans is where the dry heat is.
Pretty much the same thing I'm working on doing.

A:

A roadtrip would be a nice break, although I wouldn't take the girlfriend... otherwise it's solid nagging because of the heat, I'm sure.

Nagging from young GF is not to be tollerated. She hasn't been around enough to be really attached to or care enough for you that you should put up with it. Besides, there are A LOT more women out there. Dad used to say that all he could guarantee me about women is that there'll be another. Sounds like improved health, road trip, new Z, new GF all at the same time.
Anyone can drive a new car.

A:

haha, it's not that she nags me.. she just hates the heat...so I guess I understand it..
One step at a time.. roadtrip and and a new Z...
I'm hoping for a nice 69/70 240z... but I'd settle for a 71 as long as it's a "series one" .. maybe a 72 if the price is right...

.. or a 73 like this..
http://classifieds.hybridz.org/showproduct.php?product=2785&cat=8&page=1
so basically, a 240z.. I'd prefer a "series one" .. but either way, it's still a Z

Lvcien - that's what refrigerators are for - GF - heat - nagging - stuff her in
the fridge till the naggings over.
'Course with the heat wave in the rest of the country, make it a big one you can both use.
