BEST AND WORSE AUTO PARTS STORE

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

My top three worse suppliers are:
1. Napa - they charge $10 shipping for parts that they dont carry on their store, poor cutomer service.
2. Autozone - Slow/poor customer service, ignorant sales person.
3. Pepboys - Ignorant sales rep.
Best:
1. Carquest - Although a little expensive for the parts but they are really knowledgeable when it comes to their job.
2. Kragen - Quick shipment, no shipping charges plus I get 10% military discount.
Whats your opinion on these topic?

A:

Have to say Kragen takes my worst autoparts store. Everytime I've gone in there I've gotten poor customer service, overcharged(charged for wrong part), and they tried to give me the wrong part. I think it all depends on where you live for the customer service, and the sales people knowing their stuff.
NAPA in my neck of the woods is the best for me (the sales guy also has a Z so he knows whats up).
1972 240z w/L28, tokico shocks and springs, and a 5 speed waiting. Also running high performance ultra mega blinker fluid, that's at least an extra 50hp to the wheels.

I have never heard of NAPA charging for shipping?

Napa has my vote for best, and for the same reason Comrad G states: the guys at the store I go to know their stuff, plus they've gotten to know me well enough that I almost always get a discount. (Don't all these stores use basically the same suppliers anyway — in other words, you get basically the same part from almost all of them, just in a different box?)
I've also had good experiences with Napa taking back incorrect stuff, even electrical — and a friend of mine is on about his third set of 'lifetime' brake shoes from them. He just brings in the shoes and the receipt (which he's a nazi about keeping) and they give him a new set, no charge. These are for a '73 Ford Van and he bought the original set of brakes back in the late '80s.
Napa — the one I go to — charges shipping only on specialty parts. For example, I got an adaptor for a Grant steering wheel through them. Even with the shipping, however, it turned out to be within a few $$$ of what the Pep Boys a few towns away was selling for off the shelf.
And speaking of Pep Boys, they're my 'worst.' Once went in and stood at parts counter while 5-6 guys talked on the phone or to each other and for 10 minutes nobody paid any attention to me. Have never gotten parts there since.

Cant really say anything bad about Autozone they offer a lot of free services like alt system check, stater sys check and also a great lone a tool program.
I think Pep boys would have to be the worst, they charge a lot for everthing they have!
CSK Auto sales some kick ass generators there made by Champion Power Equipment! THE BEST IN POWER EQUIPMENT !
1990 RS Camao (Ya i know im getting a Z but i still love my Camaro!)
2002 Z28 LS1 T56 yes its fast no you cant drive it!

We are screwed in the Northwest. We have NAPA, Parts Express and Autozone.
We have some Schucks but since they were bought out by Autozone they are the same store.
Autozone. Complete morons. At least at the 3 or 4 I have visited. Impossible for them to pull up a parts code and grab the right one from the shelf.
Rule 1. Always open the box and compare the part number on the computer to the one on the box if you do not know exactly what it should look like. "No, I said Nissan, not Chevy."
NAPA has been good and they are cheap but never bought any replacement parts but they seem knowledgeable.
Parts Express: overpriced. Not sure why anyone would shop there. Around 25% more for everything.
I wish we had a Pep Boys close.

i usually head to autozone just because i like the company, ive followed them for a while now and l like the services/parts they have. Customer service is pretty much always going to be on a store by store basis, so its hard to judge a whole company on one store.

Liked Autozone and have now switched to NAPA.
My dad owned a machine shop for 50+ years. he is now retired and went to work part-time for Autozone. He now is at NAPA, so I followed him. No loyalty to any one auto parts store. More loyalty to where my dad is at the time. he knows his stuff and people come back to the store because of him and his knowledge. other then that, I'll go to the parts store that is nearest to me when I need a part. I take the average sales persons knowledge out of the loop by usually knowing what I need and what it looks like.

The door is unlocked for business at 8:00 AM at Pep Boys on Delaware Avenue in Philadelphia. I walk in at 8:05 AM with some other guy walking in behind me. I get within 15 feet of the Parts Counter and the parts sales doofus in his late 40's says to a younger parts doofus, " I can't believe these fu@&in people come in here this early."
I got into a shouting match with that A-hole. The General Manager escorted me from the store, he say's " I must have misunderstood what the parts guy said."
I said, " Don't misunderstand me, you lost about five thousand a year in cash sales right here and now".
I called Pep Boys Corp Office. After some polite dialoge, I am told that that particular store is used for "training".
So, I came away with the knowledge that Pep Boys train their employees to be ignorant pieces of sh!t
Advanced Auto always comes thru for me now. I can order something over the phone without an account or credit card. Just show up at the store usually the next day by 9:00 AM and my stuff is there.

O'Reilly auto parts is about the only place I found that stocks NGK plugs...
I use Autozone most of the time and look up what I want on-line before I go so I don't deal with parts peope, the only bad thing is standing in line to pay.
Pepboys F*cked up my 4x4 one time and it pulled hard to the left, went back and they could not fix it, told me to take it somewhere else and didn't even refund money paid for what the could not fix. I also TOLD them replace the steering box which the did not do trying to tell me it was fine. What they didn't understand after years of following Chevy and Ford ruts 40 miles past the 4 whell only sign on the Island and you have one tire in the track and the other fighting the other side for years it shot. So I take it to a good place and the box was bad and so was the setup up on the front end. 600 busk later drove like it use to. That was the first and only time I took a car there and the last time. I don't care if they are next door.
Oh I also had them install shocks with free install didn't make it one mile back to the house and the bozo's didn't even put the top nuts on and they fell out!

After that, it's the return policy.........

im near philly too, and my sister took her explorer to get the front rotors cut and new pads at pep boys...i was gonna tell her id do it myself but i was to busy. Long story short they had her car for almost 3 days, called her the second day and said they she could pick it up, so i drive her over there only for the dumba$$ service guy to say that she couldnt pick it up because they lost the pads and they couldnt finish it...WTF? Thats no more than like an hour job, how do you lose pads? I think they just F'ed her over cause she was a woman, but still. Pep boys are retarded, ill never go there for anything
EDIT: forgot to mention they initially overcharged her $70, thankfully she spoke up and was like why the F is this so expensive, and they corrected it, but jesus what a bunch of idiots

I work for csk in colorado at the moment so im not complaining about my discount and not having to deal with anyone to get parts. But the best place to get parts is partsamerica.com its what autozon advanced and csk get online orders from and but the web has the best price. Napas good for more odd parts for me they just deal with alot more oddball parts. Not saying csk is the best just depends on the moron you get. Ive been other checkers and was treated like i was a moron and got into an arugment with the parts counter kid. Then went to Napa to try some bg44k and was treated alot better. Its usualy a hit or miss on the service you get from store to store some napas zones etc. are great some can suck my.... anywho
"*story* went to autozone to get a new cap and rotor for a SBC, his answer "what year" lets see.......they made then for about 50 years,"
Reason for year is to look up a part number on th epc you need a year and model. a 1950 cap and roter and dizzy is not the same as a 1985. its like saying you want a cap and roter for a 77z and not telling him you have a 81zx dizzy on it. Same l28e isnt it?

Worst:
Autozone - Couldn't get a part right if it was the only car they had parts for.
Advance Auto Parts - Ditto
NAPA - Poor selection and obscene shipping charges when item not stocked
None of these stores even knew what a Datsun 280ZX was (or Nissan for that matter either)
Best:
Courtesy Nissan - Always dependable
Rock Auto - Again always dependable, and best prices. Even had hard to find parts
Even though these are online stores for me, the addition of shipping was still far better then any others and any dealer (if the dealer could even get the parts)

Here's something funny:
I just went to AutoZone website, picked out about 8 different random Chevy vehicles from 1960 - 1990, each one a "SBC", 350, 5.7L., some from sports cars, some sedans, some trucks, some vans.
Look at the results for distributor caps:
1. DR976
2. DR920
3. DR942
4. DR906
Yes, several were the same, but just in that short search I found 4 different ones!
Now wouldn't you have been MORE mad if they just grabbed a random one for a random Chevy SBC, you bought it, drove home, went to put it on, and IT WAS THE WRONG ONE!!! Then you'd be posting how STUPID they are for giving you the wrong one!! Hilarious!

1982 280zx...newest acquisition...

Cyind- NAPA carries NGK plugs also, always had them in stock when I've bought them.
Trippint10 is right, if the year makes a difference in what part you'll get then asking what year is a valid question.

Comrad Grrr,
NapA here does not stock them I called and asked before?
Go in a Autozone and tell them you want Bosch plugs for a SBC 350 and you even give the the part number. They want to play "what it's in game". Tell them a 1977 Datsun 280Z. Look on face priceless... LOL

VatoZone friggin sucks. They typically have one person working the parts counter and the checkout with a dozen people in the store.
NAPA may be a little more expensive but they actually look through books for parts. And they don't give you that deer in headlights look when you ask for parts fitting a vehicle more than 30 years old.
CSK stores are generally ok too. I go there for the tool rentals occasionally.

O'Reilly's gets my vote for best. I have ordered and found in stock numerous parts for my z.
Advance: I have asked for the higher end part only have the counter person bring up the low-end part.
Napa: Pricey and often doesn't have what I want.
And I too have no clue what an SBC is.
