sucks to be me - car stolen :-(

A&Q about 350Z
Q:

Well, I went to leave for work today and my '81 is gone.... so now I can't work... I gues so I guess I am gonna try to get my '77 on the road this weekend... not sure if I will be able to pull it off or not, but there's always hoping....
And I will be putting an alarm system on the '77... and maybe I will sleep in it... or rig it to blow up if somebody tries to steal it... At least then my car would have revenge on the fools.
Guess I shoulda put the stock head on the '81... oh well.

I bought a battery isolator and yet to have installed it. Handy little thing that isolates the battery from the rest of the car (duh) so it can't be started or hotwired without that isolator key or removing the isolator (I THINK?!) I haven't really looked at it yet but it's definitely going on both classics.

The only thing that alarms do is make people want to bash your car to shut the fool thing up. External alarms do nothing positive.
Kill switch(es) and mounting an alarm INSIDE THE CAR are the way to go. The car won't start and 130DB is enough to make then not think about anything but getting out.
Sorry to hear about it.

yeah... I'll definitely be looking for it... and thanks for the tips about the anti-theft stuff... detachable steering wheel sounds like a very nice addition as well as multiple kill switches....
The thing is, I haven't been working on the car here... been working on it at my parents since I am technically not allowed to work on it at my apartment complex... and I am in a "good" part of town.
Yeah, not to many brown 280ZXs around here... and it is a 2+2 with 70's aftermarket rims and factory rear louvers. Actually, I don't remember ever seeing another brown 280ZX at all around here.
Anybody in Tucson, AZ or surrounding areas should keep an eye out for it... I wanna nab those creeps.

Oh its in AZ, Ill keep an eye out, as I know most z car guys locally, and I get offered ALOT of z cars. I have internal and external sirens in my car too, it is LOUD, and anoying when that sucker goes off when the im in the car. I gurantee you, that alarms are good anyways, as I have my car parked RIGHT next to where I sleep, under my car port, and if that alarm goes off im RIGHT THERE, so it does do good. But in a walmart parking lot, no it doesnt have much effect. Ill take some pics of my detachable steering wheel, soon.

nope no pictures.... not really anything special about it....
brown '81 280ZX 2+2 with
1. T-Tops
2. rear factory louvers(black)
3. clear headlight covers(one has a hole in it)
4. missing top part of windshield trim (somebody decided to use black silicone instead of a new window seal).
5. Dent right above windshield
6. Dent next to passengers side tail light
7. All windows except windshield are tinted (blurry and needs to be replaced)
8. Aluminum Rims (Appliance - same color as car - inside is brown, rim itself is just plain aluminum color)
9. Antique alarm lock on rear of car near the driver's side tail-light.
10. smalll inverse dent on the hood (above vavle cover area - looks like somebody left a tool under the hood and then tried to close it)
11. Tan interior
12. Muffler (glass pack) comes out of drivers side instead of passengers side...
HEHE, I just thought of something.... the gas cap is locked.... and it only had about a half tank of gas.

I cut down the Grant hub on a table saw with a metal blade and ran a tap to continue the threads. Before I shortend the hub felt like I was driving a chopper. So far so good 10,000 miles with it. This is a Grant 5 bolt hub quick release. For 6 bolt , Momo etc, there seam to be lots more options on ebay.

zxtoy.... I checked with the apartment complex before calling the police... they haven't had any cars towed recently. And even if it was towed, the towing companies alert the police about any car that they had to tow under those circumstances.
1 fast z... actually from here to Mexico, it is about 90 miles... I go down to Nogales quite a bit, and it is about 90 miles exactly from here to the border crossing.
I really don't think that's where it went.... I do have my suspicions though, and I will be checking that out tomorrow.
Oh, and It would be able to get over 150 miles on a half a tank... unless they were "joy riding", it should be able to go for at least 200... maybe more after having tuned it more earlier the day it got stolen.
If they broke the gas cap (original), wouldn't they have to totally jack up that side of the car? Unless they we "professionals" that is.
The REALLY SUCKY thing is, I had probably put 80+ hours into working on that car over the past few weeks...

Quick close the gate before the......... Horse gets out! Doh, it's gone! lol
Sorry that happend to you though, honestly, that sucks balls.
Please everyone get alarms in your Z's, thieves do target them regardless of year. Whoever says alarms dont do anything are the dumbest fools on the planet, you need to spend a bit of coin to get a good alarm with a fuel pump cut off, ignition cut off, hood/hatch sensors, interior motion sensors, 120db+ siren with internal battery backup, the whole nine... DONT go cheap on an alarm, even if the alarm is more than what you paid for the car it all comes down to how screwed you're going to be when your baby gets taken from you after all that hard work fixing her up.

If you have a kickass alarm similar to the kind I mentioned above, short of them getting a truck and actually lifting your car up onto the back of it (with the alarm still screaming at them) they wont be able to steal it. No doubt some PRO theives would have transport methods for doing those kind of jackings but not your average run of the mill crackhead looking for stereos to steal or punk kids looking for cars to joyride in etc

From my perspective, all alarms do is notify the theif (and surrounding area) that you car has an alarm, and the surrounding people just think "they forgot to press the button".
What I am currently thinking about is a system that has no alarm and leaves a little mess.
#1 - spring loaded spike placed in steering column
#2 - spike constructed of tungsten or other metal/alloy with high temperature threshold.
#3 - deactivation button
#4 - automatic braking system
Goes like this: you hop in your car, deactivate "alarm", drive off
Theif hops in your car, drives off, hits 10mph, spike rapidly heats, brakes automatically apply, spike ejects somewhere into ribcage and rapidly cauterizes the wound, theif tries to escape/run off.
You are left satisfied; either by the theif showing up in the news dead, or in the hospital slowly recovering.
Any constructive criticism? :sarcasm:
no hippies either saying theifs have "rights"

>From my perspective, all alarms do is notify the theif (and surrounding area) that you car has an alarm, and the surrounding people just think "they forgot to press the button"
It's not about the siren, it's about disabling your car so it cant be driven away! With the ignition killed, and the fuel pump cut off how do you suggest someone is going to start the car and drive away in it? Hot wiring it wont even work! All the while a loud as sh!t siren is screaming at them saying "Hi, look at me! I'm trying to steal a car that wont start!" How long do you think they'll hang around for eh?

'How long do you think they'll hang around for eh?'
ever see a 'rolling traffic impound' operation? flatbeds come rolling up, hook a car, drag it up on the flatbed, and drive off. takes less than 30 seconds to drag a vehicle with four locked wheels up onto the bed, and then they drive around the corner and finish the job. nobody pays a tow truck or flatbed any mind. all they have to do is really get two wheels on the bed and drive a block away to finish it. i have watched tow companies with fat slobs running the trucks sweating like hogs hook six cars in less than four minutes. once that street was cleared, six more trucks came and got more cars off the next street. if they want it, they will get it, and there really is no defense against pros with a tow flatbed. your only hope then is a lojack or other gps system installed to notify cops to get to the car before its parted out and a total loss. even now lojack isnt that great because thieves are knowing where they are and are pulling them out, or they just move the car to another area and let it 'cool off' till they come back and hook it. sad to say, cops have let lojack equipped cars be dismantled so they have more evidence on the shop doing the work.
they want it, they got it, nothing you can do about it.

what you need to deter theives is one of those boot things that they put on your car for too many unpaid tickets. no theif would try to steal a booted car! they might even feel sorry for what they think is a fellow law breaker who got caught and booted. then you just remove your boot thing and drive away!

You guys are a riot... LOL
Or you can do the real easy thing, and just make sure your car looks like total crap.... that way, you don't even have to worry about locking it unless you have a good sound system in it.
It's also fun to have a total crap looking car that is a lot faster than anybody would expect.
I have an idea... get an alarm system that notifies you, straps the perp(s) into a 6-point harness, have a wireless PA system so that you can notify the perp(s) that you will now be driving the car directly to the Police/Sheriff office via remote control. And have a video camera so you can capture the expressions on their faces.
Seriously though... I really want a trunk monkey.

A camera by the sunvisor that sends you a picture to your cell phone and the police of a car jacking. That would be entertaining. Esp. if a gps was attached to it that sent a map out every 5 mins of where the car was. Should be easy with all that new cell phone technology.
